Default Dune Messiah ᑐ ᑌ ᑎ ᕮ ᑎᑎ

Quote:
Following a chart-topping opening weekend for director Denis Villeneuve's new Dune film (the highest-grossing yet for any movie that simultaneously premiered in theaters and on HBO Max), Legendary and Warner Bros. announced this week that Dune: Part Two is officially in development. But hey, why stop at just two?

After all, Frank Herbert wrote six Dune novels in total: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. His son Brian Herbert has since teamed up with co-writer Kevin J. Anderson for a series of even more prequels, sequels, and spin-offs set in the universe of Dune. Not all of that material is crying out for adaptation, but Villeneuve told EW earlier this year that he would like to make "at least three" Dune films.

The new Dune film covers the first half of Herbert's original novel, and Dune: Part Two will tackle the rest. But Villeneuve believes that adapting Dune Messiah on top of that is important to conveying the full saga of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).

"I always envisioned three movies," Villeneuve says. "It's not that I want to do a franchise, but this is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full arc would be nice."

As Herbert readers know, the world of Dune gets stranger with every book. By the end of Children of Dune, one character has begun to transform themself into a human-sandworm hybrid that becomes the title character of God Emperor of Dune. Adapting that transformation might be too much even for Villeneuve, but he's definitely interested in Dune Messiah.

"Herbert wrote six books, and the more he was writing, the more it was getting psychedelic," Villeneuve says. "So I don't know how some of them could be adapted. One thing at a time. If I ever have the chance to do Dune: Part Two and Dune Messiah, I'm blessed."

In the meantime, Dune: Part Two is set to hit theaters Oct. 20, 2023.

I'm surprised they didn't get all filmed back to back like LOTR did. I know they wanted to see if the first was a success but if a studio has confidence in a franchise the people would too and come safe in the knowledge they won't get blue-balled and left on a cliffhanger

3 movies was director Villeneuve's original vision, but if comparing to David Lynch's Dune, Lynch's team was able to fit more into one film than the two new Dune films in terms of completing a story, but at the cost of shortening it. At the end of Lynch's Dune, the daughter was already a kid walking and talking, but in Dune Part 2,
[Show spoiler]still in the womb by the end of the film.

In other words, I think with Villenueve's slower pacing, more epic style, it's going to take 5 films to complete his story telling approach if he's starting the next book.

If these films can sustain themselves financially, that could be cool if there are 4, 5 or 6 Dune films instead of 3. It'll depend on audience attendance too as usual.

That probably saves the most money, making all 3 at one time if possible, since they don't have to reset everything each time, which costs extra money versus having most things all ready to go at one time versus 3 separate times.
It's a bigger risk up front, and the market would need to be tested to see if the audiences are interested.

I'm of the opinion of wanting all six Frank Herbert DUNE books to be adapted to the silver screen. Don't care much about the Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson spin-offs. Those could be left to comic books.
Very glad that Villeneuve wants to also adapt DUNE MESSIAH. Children of DUNE 2000s mini-series adaptation combined the second and third book.

It would be amazing if they turned this into a 12-film series.

I for one cannot wait to talk this movie down for years, and then not watch it.

Let's just talk about it before it becomes announced.

Denis Villeneuve says the script for ‘DUNE MESSIAH’ is being written right now & is almost finished.

“I don't know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis - but my dream would be one last go on this planet that I love.”

I thought director Denis Villeneuve was supposed to be making Rendezvous with Rama after he finished Dune 2. I don't know if it's been pushed back, I hope to see a good film version before I pop my clogs.

He just said the script for Messiah is being written and that he doesn't know when he'll do it. It doesn't mean it's his next movie.

If Part 2 is a massive hit, guaranteed they'll fast track Messiah. Although I dont mind waiting a bit if it gets us Rama, been wanting that since I first read the novel back in the 70s. Last attempt was back in '99...

I’m so excited to know that a Dune: Part Three (Messiah) script is nearly finished. I’m assuming Denis will start developing Rama after the release of Part Two and then once that film is complete and released, he’ll go back to Arrakis one last time.

Villeneuve has been doing nothing but sci-fi since Arrival. I’d like to see him do another smaller Enemy-esque project in between these next few.
