Default HBO's "The Gilded Age"

Quote:
The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old ways and brand new systems, and of huge fortunes made and lost. Against the backdrop of this transformation, HBO’s The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old-money aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook.

Accompanied by Peggy Scott, an aspiring writer seeking a fresh start, Marian inadvertently becomes enmeshed in a social war between one of her aunts, a scion of the old-money set, and her stupendously rich neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife, George and Bertha Russell. Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?

Series regulars include Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Denée Benton, Louisa Jacobson, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel, Jack Gilpin, with Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski.
This premiered on HBO/Max on Monday night and has a total of 10 episodes. Anyone else check it out? Julian Fellowes created it, so if you enjoyed Downton Abbey and are a fan of period pieces, you should enjoy this one. It currently has a 8.0 on IMDB but is getting mixed reviews.

HBO built a rather large set for this in New York, but many interior shots took place in actual locations in Newport, RI. Architecture is a hobby of mine and I have been part of their Preservation Society for a while and visit the mansions every year. If you've ever toured the mansions in Newport then you'll see some of their interiors featured in the show.

The Breakers

The Elms

Marble House

Rosecliff - the infamous True Lies ballroom tango sequence was filmed in the ballroom.

Big fan of Downton Abbey, so I was interested in this... then I heard Christine Baranski was in it. She annoys the F outta me, so I'll probably pass.

Okay, but surely Carrie Coon makes up for it, right?

Great pilot. The sets are mavelous it really is stunning you really are being transported back to 1882. The cast is great too.

They really went all out for the sets and excellent tracking shots which take you from the foyer to different areas in one shot which gives you an idea of how grand a scale it is. HBO is not commenting on the budget, but I imagine it is up there.

I was trying to determine where the scenes in the Russell's mansion were filmed because it did not look familiar to me. Then you learn it's a set which is quite remarkable. A closer look does reveal it to be a set (especially the exterior portions), and it looks a little "too good" but it is supposed to be a new mansion after all.

Looking forward to episode 2. I feel this show will slowly gain momentum and popularity as it goes on.

She's actually quite riveting in the show. Makes me want to check out The Leftovers now.

Watched the first episode (DVR'd) tonight. More for my wife but kept me interested. May keep watching it plus I love Taissa Farmiga.

Loving this very much. Lets hope this gets future seasons!

Especially drawn to the character of Ada played by Cynthia Nixon. Such perfect casting for a spinster Auntie. She is so likeable as a character.

I really episode 2 as well and it’s definitely gaining some momentum. I feel like this show will be given the green light for a second season because of all the money put into the sets.

Nice little behind the scenes tour with the lovely Carrie Coon. She is simply mesmerizing in this. It will be a crime if she isn’t nominated for a Golden Globe.

It's been renewed for season 2! https://deadline.com/2022/02/the-gil...bo-1234933263/

When it released I wasn't terribly interested after watching the pilot, but episodes 2 and 3 were so dang good. I am glad this is being released weekly or I would have finished it by now! Carrie Coon... ugh that woman is such an amazing actress!

It feels so long since the first season that I don't even remember everything from it! Hopefully there will be a good recap in the first episode of S2.

It's been, what? 19 months? I honestly forgot it existed.

Wonder if the Belgravia sequel had anything to do with this taking so long.
