Default Welcome to Derry — HBO “It” prequel series

Prepare to learn more about the nightmarish, trans-dimensional evil clown at the center of It.
A prequel series based on the Stephen King novel is in the works at HBO Max, the newsletter The Ankler reports. Tentatively titled Welcome to Derry, the show will take place in the ‘60s and explore the origins of the curse that would haunt the small Maine town for the next 27 years — as well as the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.

Per Variety, Andy Muschietti, who directed the 2017 blockbuster It: Chapter One and its sequel It: Chapter Two, will write and executive-produce the series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. Muschietti and Fuchs developed the story for the show.
As a huge fan of King’s novel, I’d love to see the interlude chapters of Derry’s past translated to screen.

Wasn't there talk of fusing them together like the original mini-series?

Muschietti said years ago that a director's cut of the two films plus a supercut combining the two (mimicking the narrative structure of the novel) was going to be released, but nothing materialized since then.

I'd give this a try. I liked the first film quite a good amount. Second one was decent but felt too long and didnt like it as much as the first. But still OK. So, Im in, I guess.

This is likely a replacement for the rumored “supercut” that Andy Muschietti was hoping to craft. I hope we at least get the deleted scenes for Chapter 2 at some point.

I don't see how this could be a replacement for the supercut though, since this is an entirely different project.

I hope that King will pen an episode or two,it would be interesting to see him write Pennywise again.

I’m surprised Dally hasn’t posted anything in here yet.

Peekaboo!

I'm certainly intrigued. There's more than enough material in the novel to justify a prequel series exploring the history of Derry and Pennywise's previous acts of violence. I don't wanna get too invested just yet, though, cause we're still waiting on that supercut, as well as the follow-up book that King was rumoured to be writing (which I'm increasingly thinking doesn't exist, lmao).

At one point Muschietti said that for the so-called supercut he'd have to shoot a bunch of new stuff, including flashbacks covering some of the past events Mike learns about over the years.

Wouldn't surprise me if some of those ideas have translated to this.

Pennywise does seem like a character people would like to see more of (beyond the context of the It novel).

As others have said, I'm curious about what happened to the director's cuts of the movies. A supercut merging it all into one movie (and then doing a mini-series edit of it because why not) would be a nice way of them building hype for the series even if it is unconnected to that portrayal.

With all the buzz about the future of HBO Max’s content, I’m hoping this show doesn’t get axed. It seems the writer’s room began in June but there’s been nothing since.

Yeah, who knows if this will survive the Axe of Zaslav. Or Peacemaker, Harley Quinn, or any of the few shows I watch.
