What's the deal with CODA and Italy? Eagle Pictures also released a BR of the movie in February. The BR was not released elsewhere in the world.

Eagle Pictures helped fund the film, securing their rights well before Apple acquired "global rights" for $25 million at Sundance. They have licensing in Italy for it for 20 years.

https://variety.com/2021/film/spotli...da-1234898672/

Quote:
Included in the budget was roughly $6 million in foreign territory presales, brokered by Pathé, which presented an obstacle to any player looking to take global rights to the film (a common requirement for streaming services who need to feed content to worldwide subscribers). Buying back foreign distribution rights is messy work that can quickly become expensive, one dealmaker unrelated to this transaction said — especially when some of those international rights holders say they were blindsided by Pathé, and only learned of Apple’s acquisition of “CODA” in trade publications like Variety.

That’s the case with Eagle Pictures, Italy’s leading independent distribution company (presided by Tarak Ben Ammar), as well as Tripictures in Spain.

Andrea Goretti, the CEO of Eagle Pictures, told Variety that the company was still planning to release “CODA” for Christmas and has already sold Pay TV and free TV rights in Italy. Goretti said he received a call from Pathé on Feb. 1 to inquire on their willingness to sell back the Italian rights, he said. Goretti said the deal — which gives Eagle Pictures the Italian rights to the film for 20 years — was finalized on Jan. 7, and the company just processed the down payment.

“This is a film which was financed in large parts thanks to well-established independent distributors like Eagle Pictures, who read the script and put the risk when no one was there,” said Goretti. “We have no intention to give back these rights now because we love the film, we think it’s got a strong potential and we’ll stick to our plan to give it a big release on Christmas.” He added that Pathé, which is also a indie player, should understand the importance of preserving long-term relationships with independent distributors around the world. In Scandinavia, Nordisk confirmed it had pre-bought the film and declined to comment on the deal with Apple and potential talks with Pathé.

Well, I think it's safe to assume that this one won't be English friendly.

Just took a look and maybe BFI to the rescue.

Yeah, I haven't seen it but am assuming there's a lot of subtitles in it which would make an Italian release rather useless for people who don't understand Italian (and I only know bits and bobs). All the rippers out there will no doubt swap out the subs for English ones but that's far too much like hard work for me, not that my elderly PC could do any of that anyway!

Yes, there are a ton of subtitles in it -- a release without English subs would be pretty worthless to an English-speaking audience. IMO, the film's ending is a little too sweet for my tastes, but the film overall is recommended.

Which is what I thought after taking a look at both the synopsis, which directly mentioned CODA == Child of Deaf Adults, and the trailer.

re. John Wick: I really don't get why people sometimes appear to be chasing the Eagle releases no matter what. John Wick has stylized titles and I'd never swap the US releases for anything else, because I expect them being gone (and remember very well that other releases (I think it were the German ones) dropped them before already). Unless one doesn't care about that of course.

UK Warner releases of JW 1&2 has same stylized titles and is said to have a tad better encoding in the black areas IIRC

People say a lot of things. But what I meant is I'd never swap any proper release with the proper stylized titles for a release that will most like come without them at most likely no real benefit.

Eagle Picture's BR release of CODA (2021) did not have burn-in Italian subs. Using external sub would not be awkward for this movie assuming that they don't do burn-in sub for the 4K release. I will pre-order it once the button is live probably along with 4Kult John Wick 2 & 3.

This is not an Apple production tho, they bought it after it premiered at Sundance.

Wait, why do we think this won't have English subs?

In any case, I have an Oppo so I can load custom subs, but yeah I'd rather not, and that sucks for everyone who can't.

Their regular CODA Blu-ray that was released in Feb doesn't have them:

I'm guessing it's a rights issue. Seeing as they are the only ones putting out a physical release, it would be a no brainer to include English subtitles to increase their sales (they did it for Diabolik). It's very likely that Apple has exclusive rights to that and Eagle couldn't get them, or they didn't even bother.

It's an Italian release made by a Italian company. They rarely put English subtitles on their locally authored releases because there is literally no need for them to do so, it's not intended to be some kind of worldwide release. This is repeated across any number of localised disc releases that are exclusive to whatever country.

Interesting cover art shift before and after the Oscar wins:

The 4K front cover has an image from the Blu-ray back cover (which is probably photoshopped) jammed onto it. I wish they'd just used the Blu-ray image without adding that, but it's most interesting that Eagle have now downplayed the Italian title and prominently advertise the original English title instead. I guess they're trying to get international sales, too.

EDIT: According to Amazon, the Blu-ray is being re-released as some kind of Limited Edition, on the same day as the 4K UHD release, with matching cover art.

Won’t get many international sales without broader language support. The movie had some big Oscars wins, it’s not a surprise that the marketing has shifted to its OG title along with re-releasing the Blu under the same.

Eagle loves to re-release BDs, even if it's a bit silly to do so when the previous one came out over a month ago.

Silver Linings Playbook has, I kid you not, 5 different editions released. And the last re-issue from 2021 has some interesting credits on the back:

Harvey's name removed and The Weinstein Company is simply listed as "The Company". I don't think I've ever seen that credits text being changed before (all the new Matrix releases for example still say "Written and Directed by The Wachowski Brothers").
