Gran Turismo and the F&F movies have nothing in common outside of both having driving in it. Even with the race focused original three F&F movies, they don't resemble Gran Turismo. This would be like saying we don't need Cool Runnings because Citizen Kane already featured a sled.

Gran Turismo is a realistic driving simulator game series.

Fast & Furious is basically a live-action adaptation of Saints Row, minus the aliens and virtual reality.

I dunno... Initial D is seeped in Japanese drift culture and phat beats. Plus it's melodramatic as hell. See, that's the thing with GT - it's a pure driving sim with no real personality of its own.

On one hand...why on earth would you want to adapt a realistic racing sim? It's like...what's next, Pilot Simulator? Roller Coaster Tycoon? But on the other hand, you can literally do anything you want with the story and characters....because GT has none. So long as you remain faithful to the realism, physics, and beautiful cars and beautiful locales, it's a blank canvas.

Apparently, the rumors of a GT TV show are false. Sony is instead aiming for a movie, and is courting Neill Blomkamp to direct.

I've hoped for a Forza Motorsport movie for a while, simply based off of the idea of being able to show different kinds of racing compared to WEC, Formula 1, NASCAR, etc. GT is of course a kind of influence for games like Forza or Project Cars, so this very much has the same potential.

The idea of course doesn't require "adapting" something like the GT franchise, but the brand is iconic and beloved, exponentially increasing any potential audience size based on said brand's association with the movie. But yes, aside from the "business reasons" it seems a little odd.

But if I try really hard, I suppose you could also "adapt" the concept of beginning with entry-level vehicles and have a character rise up to race in much more experienced levels of racing. Maybe?
