Default Coraline 4K UHD (2009)

Coraline 4K Blu-ray

Coraline 4K Blu-ray Steelbook

Quote:
The Laika company‘s stop-motion animated films “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” will be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in both standard and SteelBook forms on December 13th via Shout! Factory. The films are briefly individually highlighted below.

“Coraline” from 2009 was directed by Henry Selick, best known for also directing “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). Selick adapted the screenplay from a book written by Neil Gaiman. The film featured the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman, Ian McShane, and Keith David. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound.

“ParaNorman” from 2012 was co-directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell. Chris Butler also wrote the screenplay. The film featured the voice talents of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, Alex Borstein, and John Goodman. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound.

Both of these 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook releases will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that they each will also include their Blu-ray Disc counterpart. So far, you cannot yet find either of these available for preorder yet but stay tuned for updates. The bonus materials will include all of the previous Blu-ray extras from the latest editions as well as a booklet [for each]. Also, the 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBooks (pictured further above) each feature new hand-drawn artwork. There’s no artwork yet for the standard 4K releases of the films but stay tuned for an update on that later.

Talking Rejoice

Thank goodness Laika's films are finally coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray!! I was really floores in disappointment when last year's re-releases turned out to be 1080p Blu-ray only, and therefore avoided them altogether. But better late than never, I'm delighted my patience has paid off! These films are exactly the kind of content UHD Blu-ray was made for. Going in for Coraline, ParaNorman and Kubo & The Two Strings!

That wasn't really Shout Factory's problem tho. The master was given to them that way.

I wasn't overly fond of ParaNorman, but like Coraline a lot and I honestly would've preferred Universal releasing this instead. With Shout you never know what you'll get...

Nice for the people who aren’t 3D capable, but struggle to see the point if anyone is. It’s just such a giant part of the appeal for these films.

The actual appeal is the film itself, 3D doesnt make a good film.

This was a showcase 3D film, but there are people who don’t care for 3D and likely for those people who would choose Avatar 4K over Avatar 3D. It is a preference, just like people zooming to get rid of black bars.

Nor does widescreen

Personally, a 4K like this would only be of use in the event I want to watch the film but don’t feel like putting on 3D glasses.

Laika went through the effort of shooting this stop motion stereoscopic. It wasnt some afterthought.

I understand the 3D was the main feature of the visual aesthetic. But I still think it can't be lost how the HDR, WCG and 10-bit master will look on this format; even flattened out. It will still have a very three dimensional impact.

Great film, hopefully it'll look good. But it's shout so it'll be overpriced and probably screwed up somehow.
