Paramount Cloverfield Sequel - Babak Anvari as Director

Source: Deadline

Quote:
New ‘Cloverfield’ Film At Paramount Sets Babak Anvari as Director
September 23, 2022 - Justin Kroll

EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Paramount Pictures is looking to get the wheels turning on another popular franchise as sources tell Deadline a new Cloverfield pic is in the works with Babak Anvari directing and Joe Barton writing the script. J.J. Abrams is producing from Bad Robot, along with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard will executive produce.

As with any Cloverfield pic, plot details of any sort are being kept under wraps. It is also unknown how this new installment will link to its predecessors whether its straight sequel to the original or an anthology piece that is set in the Cloverfield universe.

The original film was not only a smash hit at the box-office but critically acclaimed specifically for its ground-breaking found footage style. Reeves directed that pic, which helped launch his career and gave Paramount a new universe to explore for future installments. Not only was the original film groundbreaking, the marketing campaign was ahead of its time as well which began with a trailer that played like a found footage comedy at a house party that quickly unveiled its sci-fi elements by the end and to this day is still considered one of the best teasers trailers in recent years. This new installment is also the first time Paramount has announced a new Cloverfield field is in development as prior sequels like 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox (which ended up premiering on Netflix) were also developed as properties with different titles and were not unveiled as Cloverfield pics until the trailers were premiered.

As for Anvari, the film marks his first major studio tentpole having cut his teeth in the arthouse thriller world. His first film Under The Shadow won him a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut Filmmaker. His second film Wounds, starring Armie Hammer and Zazie Beets, premiered at Sundance 2019 and at Cannes Director’s Forthnight and was released later that year on Hulu. Babak has also partnered with Lucan Toh and their company, Two & Two, has a TV Development Deal at AMC where they are developing a slate of projects.

He most recently directed his first major studio film with the Netflix pic I Came By, starring George Mackay, Kelly Macdonald, and Hugh Bonnevile. The film released this summer and gathered over 30 million viewing hours in its first week on the platform.

Anvari is repped by WME, Grandview, Independent Talent Group and Ziffren Brittenham. Barton is repped by CAA and Range Media Partners.

the last tidbits they used to give made it sound like a traditional sequel, but they could have walked back on that by now

I think I would prefer a more traditional sequel for the next film. Hope that is what we get.

Yep, are we really supposed to forget a giant monster was just reeking havoc on New York City (no, not that stupid iguana monster)? I want to see a new chapter with a new set of characters facing the Clover monster's wrath.

Think I'd like a sequel too. I wanna know more about the monster, or at least see it destroy more stuff. If they can somehow tie it in to 10 Cloverfield Lane as well, even better.

Took them long enough to come back to this franchise. The more Cloverfield the better imo

Hope it's a direct sequel that explores the monster further.

I liked Cloverfield Lane enough, and the third movie was...OK, but I'm with most of you here so far in that I'd love to see a direct sequel with the kaiju.

I hope this doesn't go straight to Netflix like the previous one.

I thought the third one was decent enough. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a great movie, but definitely didn’t satisfy my itch for a proper sequel.

Honestly would be awesome, but do we even know if it’s gone into production yet?

We don't, but we didn't know much about the first film and 10 Cloverfield Lane before those trailers dropped.

Don't forget The Cloverfield Paradox either. That trailer came out of nowhere and then the whole film was up and ready to be watched after the game.

To be fair with that one, it was originally a film called God Particle with the cast and director announced, a release date set and then it just never appeared, popped up a year after it was due as The Cloverfield Paradox.

Apparently a similar sort of thing was either planned or rumoured for Overlord but I think with the reception of Paradix they ended up leaving it well enough alone.

I'd like to find out what happened to the creature in the original film. Didn't they mention it was a juvenile and there was a "mother" out there? It's origins would be an interesting story. Maybe they finally killed the kid and the Mom comes in ticked off.
