Default Tarzan

Tarzan, the classic pulp hero created by Edgar Rice Buroughs, may be heading to the screen once again.

Sony Pictures has picked up the screen rights to the character from Burroughs’ estate, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., and is seeking to do a “total reinvention” of the character and intellectual property.

No writer, filmmaker, or producer are attached as the studio looks for a top-down re-imagining of the Ape Man for audiences in this time and space of the 21st century.

Sony had no comment.

I really enjoyed The Legend Of Tarzan (2016) so I am interested in this.

It had some interesting 3D, and some fun fight scenes. Darker than the average Tarzan flick though, probably hurt it. Also, Tarzan hangs out with apes all the time but yet he shaves his chest?

I'm not really interested in a new 2D Tarzan, the nature of it (vine swinging through the jungle etc) just lends itself to 3D.

Me too. I wouldn't have expected to get another movie so soon.

Fun Fact: When you say "Tarzan" to Trey Parker, it activates his PTSD. Wish I knew why.

The last one was pretty good (2016). Hoping for a traditional adventure with zero Gen Zero sensibilities. But…

Plans are in the earliest of stages we hear, with no writer, director or producer attached to what would be a full reinvention of the popular character first created by Burroughs in 1912; the author continued to write Tarzan books into the 1940s.

I've never seen any Tarzan movie all the way through, except for Disney's first one in 1999. I'm vaguely familiar with the overall story, but the phrase "total reinvention" has me cringing. I hate when studios mess with things just for the sake of it.

I saw this just now on yahoo. "Sony has exclusive motion picture rights"

How?

Isn't Tarzan in Public Domain? it's well over 75 years old.

The first 10 Tarzan novels are in the public domain. However, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. has trademarked the name "Tarzan", giving them de facto control over the property.

They've successfully used this to prevent anyone from adapting the public domain stories, suing companies whenever they try.

https://www.techdirt.com/2012/03/09/...omain-stories/

So you're allowed to adapt the original novels, but you're not permitted to use the name Tarzan.

(Though even when companies have abided by this, ERB Inc. has still tried to sue: https://www.comicslawyer.com/2018/06...marks-and.html )

Default hmmm... in the version I saw...

I'm pretty sure Jane was cheating on Tarzan with "Cheeta" (which, when taking into account his name should have probably been somewhat obvious to Tarzan, but I guess he wasn't the sharpest tac in the box... you know... what with losing his woman to an orangutang... but like the natives all say... "That's Life in the big jungle!)

Think you can still use him with an alternate name like "Tar-Zan"

That would trigger a lawsuit as a derivative.

Till now there's not really been a faithful Tarzan adaptation, but I always hope. The last one was pretty bad.
