I've been told that only the original VHS of Star Wars contains the film audiences saw in theaters in 1977. Every version after that had new special effects and changes were made.
Does anyone know if the laserdisc contains the original version? Laserdisc so long forgotten, many not remember how it was released. I have a laserdisc player. I can get a copy cheap. But, I don't want to waste my money. I have the blu ray. It's just not as good as I remember it in the theatre. I'd like to see the original again. |

The whole reason I got into LaserDisc was so I could enjoy Star Wars in its original, unedited form. So to answer your question, yes the LD is worth your time.
Of course you can go after those 2006 DVD releases which included the original theatrical cuts as a bonus disc. I later learned they were ripped from the Laserdiscs, but the audio is quite bad. Check out this video which gives a very good run down when it comes to the best version(s) to own. Definitely stop by the LD thread for better input and advice. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=140238 |

Good luck! I recommend going after these versions as they are relatively easier to find and won't break the bank.
![]() As you'll learn in the video, the Technidisc version of the first film has a newer pressing and looks really good. Not easy to find though as you have to identify the correct disc by the mint marks. Last edited by sfmarine; 11-24-2022 at 01:39 AM. |

The Special Editions came out in 1997, so every release before then (including VHS and LaserDisc) are all the theatrical cuts. The only release since then that has the theatrical cuts are the 2006 DVDs that are on the included bonus discs.

I remember it was a disappointment for many as it was the main reason why the majority of fans decided to double dip on those releases. The box set came out in 2004? You were getting the same thing all over again except for those "bonus" theatrical OT cuts which were quite mediocre. |
