Will definitely have to check this one out. Thanks for putting in, what sounds like, a tremendous effort to present the best quality audio and video you could.

I wish the footage of Judith Baldwin sloshing out of the lagoon that Sherwood Schwartz said they couldn’t use would surface as well.

What is the source of this upscale? Was there ever an official DVD release? And why is it in the public domain?

Jar Jar:
The base is sourced from two different DVDs, one which had poor colors but better detail and audio, and another with the Christmas scene cut from some versions. There has never been an official release of any type, & I don't know how it came to be public domain. Here are comparisons of the upscale and color correction:

The original series itself has a bunch of different owners: Phil Silvers' daughters because they all inherited the share of the show his production company Gladasya owned upon his death. He died right around the time Ted Turner kept the rights while selling the rest of UA back to MGM while stripping MGM of the movies it had actually made. Disney actually wanted to do a movie version of the show but could never strike a deal with all the parties who own a piece of it and neither could anyone else who expressed interest, so that's why that never happened.

This TV movie was from Paramount Television who made The Brady Bunch and made a variety series with most of the cast behind Sherwood Schwartz's back without his permission, so I believe this was partly to appease him. If they still have the negative or at least some film print, they could in theory release a better version themselves or just sell it back to Warner Bros. since they own "all the rest." They won't, so unless they have an Ebezener Scrooge-like change of heart, this is the best we will likely ever get. The screenshots at least suggest a huge improvement, especially the second one; you can actually see Gilligan's reaction.

To be clear about the rights..

UA ‘s original share of the series became part of the pre-‘86 MGM film library, which Ted Turner purchased in mid-1986 along with MGM itself. When Turner sold back the studio, he kept the library to establish his networks (TNT, etc.). Eventually Warner Bros. merged with Turner, and WB owns the rights to the series today through Turner Broadcasting.

Ordered a copy and already got a shipping notification. Happy to add this TV movie favorite to my collection even if it's not going to look pristine. When I was a kid it made me so happy that the gang finally got off the island. I loved every minute of their post-Island shenanigans. Wonderful film.

It can't look worse than the multi-generation hand-me-down copies circulating over the years.

Redwood Productions and Sherwood Schwartz had the rights to Gilligan's Island adaptations at the time, and spearheaded the Filmation series along with these TV movies. Rescue from Gilligan's Island was actually distributed by Viacom, with Paramount inheriting those rights when they purchased Viacom in 1995.

Paramount probably has the OCN or pre-prints but may have not renewed or been even allowed to, given the IP rights whirlpool between Phil Silvers daughters, Warner (they got the first series and Filmation/MGM cartoons from the Turner output, as Ted Turner kept them when he resold MGM/UA), and Universal (they co-produced the later specials The Castaways on Gilligan's Island and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island).

I caught this on tv last month... first time that I saw it since I was a kid.... wow, it looked rough... and that's kind. I always wondered why there were various public domain DVDs years ago and why it seemingly disappeared.

I wish that the two other TV movies would be released too.
