‘Street Fighter’ Film & TV Rights Secured By Legendary; Movie In Works

I always thought a TV show would be rad. Something akin to Bloodsport meets Lost with flashbacks of why the characters have arrived to fight.

But if it has to be a movie then get Gareth Evans to do it.

You don’t want it grounded? It’s called Street Fighter! Not Air Fighter or whatever floating thing you want!

I really wish I liked the 1994 film more but I just find it kind of dull. One of these days I'm hoping I'll re-watch it and proclaim it to be a misunderstood masterpiece.

I mean, it's really worth it only for Raul Julia who is A+ in that film. He's acting beyond anyone else's capabilities of that cast combined, not that means much. But dude was dying and still putting in the work. He didn't know how not to apparently.

We lost a man who hadn't peaked yet. Or maybe couldn't.

Yeah, MK95, despite some flaws, did a respectable job overall despite the PG rating. The Scorpion vs Cage fight was a favorite. MK21 got the gory stuff down, though still tame compared to the games.

Raul Julia was truly something special.

Another solid reason to rewatch the movie:

He also accepted the M. Bison role for his kids, who are huge fans of the game. Tragic what happened to him.

That said, the movie was pretty much destined to fail. Capcom required a 6 month shooting schedule and basically had a first time director since no experienced director would've taken that schedule.

Ironically enough, Capcom also had complete creative control over the project, yet still they completely got Shadaloo wrong, apparently forgetting that Shadaloo is an organization, not a city and greenlit Balrog being Chun-Li's side-kick instead of one of Bison's henchmen along with MANY other deviations from the source material, including the lack of an actual fighting tournament. I get that adaptations aren't gonna be a 1:1 translation of the source material, but damn did they take quite a few liberties which had to have the makers' explicit approval. That's unheard of.

They might also have to go the animated route in order to do it justice. Good luck finding a Chinese actress with thunder thighs, which is a must for Chun-Li and many of the special moves like Ken's Shoryuken (sp?) and Bison's Psycho Crusher I don't think can be pulled off in live-action. They tried this with the 94 movie and Raul basically just flies Superman style into JCVD. Even with today's CGI, I don't know if they can pull it off (well) in live-action, and they'd have to CGI that shit.

Raul Julia's a tough act to follow. He had no reason to give an Oscar-caliber performance for this.

Make a CGI animated movie based exactly on the Sprites of Street Fighter 2, and then you have the starting foundation. Do not use live-action for this series. They characters are clearly beyond normal humans.

Super Mario may convince studios to go that route.

Also, hopefully no origin story which slows things down to a crawl most times. Just create a story for the main conflict for why they're needing to fight, and have lots of fights, maybe 50% fighting, 50% story.

You can have Ken or Ryu and Chun Li have their motivations for fighting without needing to show their origins. Maybe have them on a quest to find out how to stop M. Bison, and then Bison sends Sagat, Balrog, and Vega after them.
The whole tournament story is tricky, best to just have good vs evil and fight along the way, avoiding the whole "Mortal Kombat" story focused on a tournament all the time. Maybe have M. Bison inside his HQ Base, protected by his fighters and Ryu and Ken and the gang have to break through by winning fights.

And include all 12 of the main SFII characters.
Ryu
Ken
Chun Li
Blanka
Zangief
E. Honda
Dhalsim
Guile
Balrog
Sagat
Vega
M. Bison

Focus on the heroes' story, but have the villains be the instigators for why they have to fight. At least that's how I would hope they would go.
Just rough ideas, but hopefully they go with something original if they go forward.

I watched the anime Street Fighter The Movie back in the 1990s, but thought it was just okay.

Thanks. Yes, it's true to the games, avoiding straying too far off the mark like the live-action Super Mario Bros, or the live-action Street Fighter Van Damme film.

The Mortal Kombat 2021 movie was decent, but a lot of origin stuff again and too much time spent with Kano IMO.

The original Street Fighter movie remains a guilty pleasure, but The Legend of Chun-Li was horrible. I don't blame Kristin Kreuk or even Neal McDonough for that, but the writing and story were atrocious (literally ripping a baby from its mother's womb; that blood-curdling scream is still etched in my memory).

Whatever road Legendary goes on with the Street Fighter franchise, I hope they hit the right balance of adventure and humor. Even with some of the more ridiculous aspects, the 1994 film measured up in spades. You could tell that Raul Julia was having the time of his life playing M. Bison, and Van Damme made for a very good Guile as well.

I'd say include the New Challengers as well: Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long, and T. Hawk.
