The only Egyptian series that I want to see is a series based on ancient Egypt, as depicted in Stephen Sommers' "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns". That could be watchable.

I'm sure this will go down well with the people of Egypt and Greece! I see they've given her a clipped English accent, because naturally all americans think all noble people of the world speak that way! Jada Pinket Smith's all over it, so it's gonna offend black people by default. So it's gonna insult the intelligence of americans, gonna piss off african americans, really gonna offend greeks and egyptians, and we brits are just getting tired of hearing our own culture hijacked to be the universal language of "royalty". Is there anyone out there who's gonna sit down to this without wanting to hate the crap out of it before the titles have even rolled?

Just got to wait and see what the final product is like now, if they are serious about stating unequivoically that Cleopatra was black, or are just examining a "what if?" scenario whilst looking at the evidence for Cleo potentially having a black mother.

I thought it couldn't get any sillier than having a black viking queen in a fictional TV series. But actually casting a black actress to play a famous historical figure of greek heritage in a so-called "documentary"...what are these guys smoking?
Looking forward to the Netflix docu about the last days of pope John Paul II played by Morgan Freeman. (Before anyone asks...I made that up.)

These Netflix guys are nuts and I hope the egyptians give them hell for that casting.

Perhaps they will, but I'm reminded of Gods of Egypt, a 2016 film which took flak for casting whites as ancient Egyptians. So we're in a bizarre situation where both historical accuracy and historical inaccuracy will get a production royally reamed.

Many nowadays still remember that Cleopatra was Greek, but I wonder: how long will it be until Alexander Hamilton is widely considered to have historically been a Puerto Rican?

Do you really need people to explain to you the differenc between Gods of sodding Egypt and a documentary series that features dramatic reconstructions between the talking head "historians"?

The lawsuit is ridiculous and won't amount to much. Has the series even played in Egypt or any territory yet? Has anyone actually seen it?

Just because someone slaps a "documentary" label on something does not mean it is. Discovery did "documentaries" on Megalodon and Mermaids.

Are there even any stated rules about what is a Documentary?

The potential 'problem' with this Netflix production is that the producers and Netflix have decided to label it as a documentary. The productions you mention are fiction.

My main issue would rather be, that it looks poorly contrived and poorly made and not worthy of your time, no matter what actress Netflix would cast as the Queen. Judging from the trailer, Julius Caeser looks spectacularly miscast as well. He was not a younger man when he first met Cleopatra, but an elder statesman at 52.

For those interested, we actually have beautiful depictions and busts of Cleopatra that survived to today, executed in her lifetime or very shortly after. She clearly had Greek/Macedonian facial features and hairstyle.

As stated before labeling something a "Documentary" does not mean much since there are no rules around the label.
