Default Digital Eclipse Gold Master Series

Quote:
Coming soon! Wishlist now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1...ng_of_Karateka

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner was a college student when he created one of the biggest-selling games of 1984: Karateka. Now, in a new interactive documentary, Digital Eclipse tells the story of how a teenager with an Apple II created one of the most groundbreaking, influential games of all time.

Discover how Karateka was made through an exhaustive archive of design documents, playable prototypes, and all-new video features. Like walking through a museum, you can explore the interactive timelines at your own pace.

The timelines reveal how Karateka became one of the first games to include cinematic scenes, a moving original soundtrack, rotoscoped animation, and a Hollywood-style love story, influencing the decades of games that followed.

At any time, play pixel-perfect versions of the original Karateka games and a variety of never-before-seen early prototypes, with rich quality-of-life features like save anywhere, rewind, chapter select, and director's commentary.

Then, enjoy two new games exclusive to the Making of Karateka. Karateka Remastered is an all-new version of the original game featuring cutting-room-floor content, commentary, achievements, and more. Deathbounce: Rebounded is a fast and frantic twin-stick shooter based on Jordan's unpublished prototype.

The Making of Karateka is the first entry in Digital Eclipse's Gold Master Series, which presents iconic games in an innovative "interactive documentary" format, putting the shared history of games and their creators into one comprehensive package.

Digital Eclipse also confirmed an Xbox release, hopefully the other consoles will be announced soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2023/07/...master-series/

* Update: Confirmed for PS and Switch as well:

https://twitter.com/digitaleclipse/s...AvHts11pgk6LaA

Next question is will there be any physical releases?

Interview with Digital Eclipse about the first title in their Gold Master series.

Quote:
Earlier this year at the ID@Xbox Showcase event, Digital Eclipse announced their Gold Master Series, a collection of interactive documentaries wrapped in video game format that celebrate key designers, studios, and games that changed the world. The first Gold Master Series title, The Making of Karateka, is out today, and chronicles how a teenage college student with a computer created one of the most groundbreaking, influential games of all time.

DE tweeted out that they’ve been purchased by Atari. They’re claiming that they will not be bound to the Atari IP. Atari got a ****ing steal I’d say. I’ve talked with several on the team about the way the industry is heading and this just reaffirms my position. They had an IPO not too long ago to fund projects and stay independent and now this. It’s a necessary evil but it’s a worrying trend.

https://www.globenewswire.com/news-r...l-Eclipse.html

Quote:
The purchase price of Digital Eclipse will consist of an initial consideration of US$6.5 million payable at the closing of the acquisition, of which (i) US$4.0 million in cash1 and (ii) US$2.5 million in newly issued Atari ordinary shares2, as well as a remaining earn-out of up to $13.5 million, payable in cash over the next ten years based on future performance of Digital Eclipse.

It is expected that the acquisition of Digital Eclipse will be completed in the coming days.
Quote:
In addition to the cash consideration, Atari will also acquire a portion of the shares in Digital Eclipse directly and the purchase price of such shares corresponding to US$2.5 million (€2.4 million) will be paid by way of set-off against the issuance of newly issued Atari SA shares3.

The reserved capital increase will result in the issuance of 20,165,794 new Atari shares. As a result, Digital Eclipse shareholders will together hold upon completion of the capital increase 4.6% of Atari’s share capital4. The determination of the number of Atari shares to be issued is based on the 20-day volume weighted average price of Atari shares on Euronext Growth Paris until the signing date of the purchase agreement of €0.1169, in accordance with the terms of the delegation to the board of directors.

The majority of Digital Eclipse shareholders, holding in aggregate approximately 95% of Digital Eclipse capital, have agreed to a 1-year lock-up on their Atari shares as from the Closing of the acquisition.
And an FAQ

https://www.digitaleclipse.com/media...-eclipse-atari

Also Heyadol there is a physical Karateka planned. I had thought they originally partnered with iAm8bit but Frost reaffirmed yesterday that it’s coming and it’s with LRG.

Not thrilled about the trend of consolidation, but DE has really been on a roll lately. If Atari money keeps them going and they retain some independence then it sounds like a win. Totally forgot Atari also acquired Nightdive Studios earlier this year, someone at Atari is making some good decisions.

Figured I would drop this here. Atari has acquired Intellivision.

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...200plus-titles

Quote:
Atari has announced that it has acquired the Intellivision brand along with the rights to over 200 games in a move that, according to Digital Eclipse's studio head Mike Mika, "ends the longest-running console war in history".

As a result, Intellivision Entertainment LLC will rebrand and will continue its work on developing and distributing the Amico brand game console (Atari keenly dodged that one). Atari, meanwhile, will license out new versions of the Intellivision games for the Amico.

The press release goes on to state that "Atari will seek to expand digital and physical distribution of legacy Intellivision games, potentially create new games, and explore brand and licensing opportunities as part of a long-term plan to create value from the Intellivision properties".

Atari's CEO Wade Rosen states that the acquisition "was a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and bring together fans of Atari, Intellivision and the golden age of gaming".

To mark the acquisition, Atari has released Intellivision-branded t-shirts via its online store, so you know it's officially official.

#3 has been revealed to be Tetris.

Quote:
Unrivaled after four decades, Tetris Forever celebrates the original, genre-inspiring puzzle game that escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, onto the world stage, and into our cultural consciousness!*

More than 15 playable classic games from the series' history are featured, including many being released for the first time outside Japan. Battle your friends in the multiplayer cult favorite Tetris Battle Gaiden, create massive explosions to clear lines in Super Bombliss, and see where it all began in 1984 with an accurate recreation of the first version of Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer.*As the next release in Digital Eclipse's acclaimed Gold Master Series, Tetris Forever includes over 90 minutes of all-new documentary footage exploring the lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company founder Henk Rogers, as they share the extraordinary but true story about Tetris.*

And as this celebration wouldn’t be complete without an all-new Tetris experience, prepare to enter the… Tetris Time Warp! Up to four players will "warp" between different eras of Tetris in real time to experience a variety of classic graphic styles and play mechanics! *
It's also conformed they're working with AREA5 for the documentary portions. THis is the same group that delivered the I Am Street Fighter and the Grounded TLoU 1 and 2 docs.

Why don’t they list the games instead of saying 15+ versions? It looks like most of them are from classic Nintendo platforms but will we get Sega’s arcade version or the infamous Tengen Tetris? Would be kind of interesting since Tengen was an Atari subsidiary as is Digital Eclipse, maybe it’s too much heartburn for Nintendo.

[Show spoiler]Infamous is a little dramatic for a Tetris game, but it was certainly a bit of a scandal back in the day.

Agreed although I could see it as a totally separate product. I can’t see MS putting up any type of barrier for them to use the games if asked.

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...2-ms-dos-games

Quote:
If you're a Tetris fan, it's impossible not to be excited for Digital Eclipse's third Gold Master Series title, Tetris Forever. And the retro specialists are continuing to sweeten the deal on this fantastic interactive digital museum, which launches on 12th November.

Two more games have been confirmed to be included in Tetris Forever, and they're both extremely early releases of the classic block puzzle. Both the AcademySoft and the Spectrum HoloByte versions of Tetris, released on the MS-DOS, will be a part of the package.

Digital Eclipse's editorial director Chris Kohler shared on Twitter (now known as X) that "a lot of work went into being able to make this simple announcement". As some fans have noted, many previous Digital Eclipse collections haven't included MS-DOS games, so this is a big deal. And it's been a "dream" of the studio for a while, too.
The AcademySoft version of Tetris for MS-DOS is the one programmed by Alexey and Vadim Gerasimov, while the Spectrum Holobyte version is the first commercial version of Tetris.

Guess it isn’t happening, but I still hope to see the Sega arcade Tetris and Tengen Tetris added to the collection. Probably relegated to a footnote in whatever documentary we get with this collection…
