![]() Halloween Horror Month 2023 ![]() Like Michael Buble appearing every Yuletide season, or the 'Strictly Come Dancing' annual 3 month slow march on Christmas, I have risen again from the crypt for another Halloween Horror Month, attempting to watch 31 films in 31 days. [Show spoiler] As always it's just an excuse to watch some Horror/Halloween films or TV in October, in the run up to the 31st. Personally I always try and go for 1 film per day (31 films). Obviously not possible for everyone, but fun to attempt. This'll be my 12th year doing the challenge (my previous years complete film lists are below). Sometimes people get hung up on what qualifies for the Halloween and/or Horror theme, it's up to you if you think it fits, same as other "seasonal" films. Just keep it varied, maybe pick certain directors, personal sub challenges/goals, eg. blu-ray only or certain years/decades. In 2019 I restricted what I watched to films of the last 31 years, and had at least one per year. The 'My Movies' app sorted by Horror genre can be handy. Here are some Horror titles currently available on BBC iPlayer: [Show spoiler] If watching some Horror/Halloween films over this month sounds fun, feel free to join in. The main thing is to just have fun, whether you end up watching 31 films, or only a handful, just pace yourself and enjoy some films or TV. Re-watch some old favourites and maybe try something new. I'll update the post below with the films I view throughout the month. I'm going to start with George A. Romero's 'Land of the Dead'. "You're dreaming, Cholo. They won't let you in there. They wouldn't let me in there. We're the wrong kind." ![]() _______________________________________ The 11 previous years film lists; 2012 [Show spoiler] 2013 [Show spoiler] 2014 [Show spoiler] 2015 [Show spoiler] 2016 [Show spoiler] 2017 [Show spoiler] 2018 [Show spoiler] 2019 [Show spoiler] 2020 [Show spoiler] 2021 [Show spoiler] 2022 [Show spoiler] . |

#18 - Dawn of the Dead (Argento/Euro Cut)
"Now you're not just playing with your life - you're playing with mine. Now, are you straight?" ![]() No change in my opinion of the Argento cut. While it's interesting to see a few extended or alternate sequences, as a film I place it last behind the Theatrical & Extended Cuts, in particular the ending biker sequence is stretched out far too long. I appreciate that had I grew up watching this cut, I may feel differently, but I think the Theatrical cut is much better paced and in it's use of the score. ____________

Phew, I thought we weren't doing it this year. I want to properly commit to it this time, 1 film a day at least, only made it a week last year. I've signed up for another sub to Shudder in preparation.

Nice, was looking forward to this. I try to watch as many new (to me) horror films as possible during this, trying for one a day as many of you are (although I won't be able to achieve that this year).
As we get closer to the end of the month I start rewatching some classics. Also, I always pick a franchise to watch all of each Halloween, this year I really want to torture my self for some reason so it's either The Howling films or Resident Evil films (or both!). * denotes a rewatch. Just got out of Saw X. Pretty solid, a tad overhyped though. Easily better than the last three films in the series, and Tobin Bell is in top form here with the script giving him a chance to flesh out the Kramer character. But it sadly falls apart in the 3rd act for me. Still, if you're a Saw fan then you probably won't be disappointed.

When people compare American Werewolf and The Howling, I've always thought it was an easy win for Landis's film. However with this rewatch something clicked, and even though I still think American Werewolf is superior, I could see why someone would prefer The Howling. Howling II is just mental, have no idea what to rate it. Reb Brown screaming is head off as always, Christopher Lee delivering some of the worst dialogue he's read with the utmost professionalism, the infamous credits sequence, the non-sensical editing. Just a poorly made and bizarre film, whilst being incredibly entertaining. The classic 'so bad it's good film'. The howling song by Babel rocks as well, even though when I hear it it conjures up images in my mind like a sleeper agent being activated of Sybil Danning ripping her top off. Howling III is somehow even crazier in parts, whilst being more competently made. However it has nowhere near the same charm the second does. Some of the intentional humour doesn't really work for me, and the story sags at times. The werewolf/marsupial action is certainly entertaining. Howling IV is one of the most boring films I have ever seen. Nothing happened for the first 45 minutes, then when things did start happening they were quick and barely visible. A werewolf doesn't really show up till the last 10 minutes, which makes the wait worth it but not really. There was an incredible [Show spoiler] /transformation scene that came out of nowhere, easily the best part, apart from dogs being used as werewolf doubles. Next weekend is Howling V, VI, VII, and Reborn. I have very low expectations. VI sounds like it could be cool. I've heard about VII being awful, the 1.8 on IMDb serves as a warning I will ignore. Was excited to rewatch my favourite Argento in 4k, got this from the Arrow Shocktober sale. Incredible upgrade from the previous blu-ray in terms of both audio and picture quality. Might have to upgrade the other Argento's now.
As for the film itself, it's such a stylish little murder mystery, it may lack logic in some parts but it doesn't matter (although I'd say this is one of Argento's best in terms of the story), just buy into it and immerse yourself into the music, charming characters, and smooth cinematography. The last 15 minutes are just pure madness. |

(23) My Dear Killer (1972) DVD.
![]() (24) The Omega Man (1971) DVD. ![]() My Dear Killer: A stylish, laid back Murder mystery thriller that has a complex plot, some grisly murders, odd characters and a creepy Morricone soundtrack. The Omega Man: Another version of the ‘I Am Legend’ novel. A cult classic of the genre that is full of great action and drama in a chilling post-apocalyptic future earth with Charlton Heston ably supported by two of my favourite 1970s actors Anthony Zerbe and Paul Koslo who give this classic sci-fi horror a groovy and cool 1970s vibe. Cheesy lines, dark humour, gripping suspense, fab action and stunts and great location shots of deserted streets of Los Angleles all add up to a lot of entertaining fun and one of the best of its type of the era. |

[Show spoiler] house is my least favourite part. Also they do Creighton dirty at the end, wish he was in the film more (maybe even make him the protagonist). It's a rip-off of The Hidden sure, but I can enjoy it for what it is. Love it when slasher franchises do different things.

[Show spoiler] , loved that.New Moon Rising might be one of the most bizarre films I have ever seen. Starring the director/producer/writer who was also in the 5th entry. It was like he realised his ownership of the rights were expiring, so he just filmed home movies with his boys and added a very small subplot of a werewolf hanging about the town. The film features no professional actors (apart from one), the cast is made up of the townspeople where the film was shot, playing themselves according to the end credits. There's more country & western gigs and scenes of line dancing than there are of any werewolves. I gave it a 0.5 rating because I think I respect it a little bit, for being so bizarrely awful. Reborn was a Twilight rip-off, those films were already insufferable and this was somehow worse. No redeeming qualities, easily the worst for me. My ranking of the series starting from the top is: - The Howling (1980) - Howling II - Howling VI - Howling III - Howling V - Howling IV - New Moon Rising - Reborn |

Remember this being more of a slasher film than it is, kind of feels like a mix of Psycho II's slow/unwinding pace combined with the set-up and kills of an 80s slasher. I think this mix of tones hurts it ultimately, but it is a pretty solid film.
Perkins acting in top form as always, but his direction should be mentioned as well. The choice of colour and camera angles in the film I really admire, it was obvious that Perkins wanted to spice things up visually. Love Jeff Fahey in this as well, really enjoyable bad/despicable guy. The soundtrack is also a bopper. Shame about the ending though, it would've been perfect to end before [Show spoiler]

![]() ![]() Just watched Encounter of the Spooky Kind which is a classic combination of horror, comedy and kung fu. I actually laughed out loud at the ending - I can't remember the last film that made me do that. The film has some serious Evil Dead energy too, down to a scene with a possessed hand. Essential viewing. |

All the segments are variations of things we've seen before, all have lame stories and nothing endings. The only segment that was enjoyable was the wraparound, but only because the ending especially was great. It feels like they're running out of ideas, which is incredible seeing as the only rules of the shorts are, have it be found footage and have it set in a specific year. |

After a tiring week, what better way to unwind than with a Fulci double bill of The House by the Cemetery and City of the Living Dead. THbtC is pretty deranged, but CotLD is just another level of unhinged - a nightmarish fever dream of gut spewing, head drilling, blood crying, brain squishing, maggot raining madness.
