Well, it's the same 4K restoration as Arrow's (done by LSP Germany), anyway.

Geoff, tell us again how much you hate the Second Sight version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4K, which deviates radically farther in color from Tobe Hooper's director-approved 4K master than virtually any director-approved master Turbine has ever worked on to date.

Or is it okay when a label pretends its director approved and puts it in a fancy box? Maybe just UK-based labels cooler? Hmm

I think you waste your time here.
If it comes to Turbine, Geoff turns into a five year old.
I once appreciated him and his knowledge, but since he's in that "I don't like Turbine and will make that clear as often as I can" mode, I really can't take him serious anymore.

You’re right, he’s wasting his time as there’s no greater mover of goalposts on this entire forum than he. Love how it’s okay, even preferred, to violate an established director-approved HDR master in the name of “pop” (ugh) when it comes to other movies but there’s so much clutching of pearls re: alterations of directorial intent with TCM (which never had an approved HDR grade to begin with), and oddly enough there’s only one person banging that drum, usually where UK labels are concerned. It’s hypocrisy at its most breathtakingly brazen, it’s amazing the hoops that will be jumped through in order to appear the most contrary in one thread to the next…but then if you inverted him you’d just end up with me. Tosspots all round

Well, the main market for this release is in fact Germany (as it features the complete German dub for the first time ever). With Arrow's disc out there for so long, I don't think it could ever compete with that.
However, Turbine also contains the 2-hour documentary GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON, which Arrow doesn't have.

TuRbInE wIlL mEsS iT uPP, aw wait, they did the perfect transfer for Arrow? omg.
Maybe next release/transfer they should do another Frighteners situation to put some respect on their name

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has been exclusively restored by Turbine in partnership with Arrow Films and is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 5.1 and stereo sound. The original 35mm camera negative was scanned in 4K resolution at Company 3, Burbank. The film was restored in 4K resolution and colour graded in HDR/Dolby Vision by LSP Medien, Uelzen. The SDR grade from Arrow's prior Blu-ray restoration served as the primary grading reference, which was supervised and approved by Director Terry Gilliam.

Serious question:

For those that haven't gotten the Arrow 4K set, but have been meaning to, this should be identical in PQ and AQ?

I already have the Criterion bluray and Arrow limited edition bluray set, so I've been procrastinating on grabbing the Arrow 4K due to overlap. This Turbine would really make a nice addition with that Gonzo doc included!

Cheers!!

Turbine / Fake HDR / DNR / HD upscale defense police force strikes again, my God.
I’m sure Fear and Loathing will be fine but their sh*t efforts won’t get any better if they occasionally knock it out of the park. It’s that simple.

I’m as fed up with that inconsistency and dishonesty on behalf of the label as is Geoff and so many others. We can’t say it often enough but as long as there are vehement defenders and supporters of the above atrocities, they’ll do it. So, it’s not a question about not "liking" them, it’s arguing in defense of the films and their intended look. The question of how good / bad the individual director-approved master turned out is wholly irrelevant. So I’m all in favor of calling out every sh*tshow they’ve done and continue to do. Same with Capelight and all the other usual suspects.

It's far from fair to call something a shitshow before it's even been released and reviewed. Turbine did great discs, and bad ones. Everyone knows that by now that you have to be cautious.

You start your tirade that this disc will probably be fine, so then, what's the reason of your post at all? Do I call you the pixel police force then? It's as tiring and awkward as the posts of the blind defenders.

And this is a German company, same as Capelight. They produce for the German market. Do you read German forums? How many people are concerned there about the pixels and the mild fake DNR? Rarely someone. It's all about the Mediabook, the Cover artwork, the paper and cardboard of the Mediabook, the limitation and maybe the German dubbing. It's surely not the few that defend their bad discs that they continue, it's the German market that let these company do whatever they want and still sell out.

I’ve posted exactly because there have been criticisms against Geoff and his negativity against Turbine and about the "uselessness" to argue with him. I think that’s unfair to say as he’s not arguing BS but clearly referring to instances where Turbine did things that went against the grain in unacceptable manners when speaking from a "videophile" point of view. By that I mean someone appreciating the most if video masters are presented as unaltered as possible without revisionist tinkering, such as the Black Phone HDR controversy, No Escape upscale, Born on the 4th of July sharpening and the sadly many more examples of that just with Turbine.

You surely know that the majority of people on this forum are all against this sort of doings - studios ruined our favorite movies sadly way too often. At a time when companies, Turbine included, release BDs and UHDs of films in what appear to be final and definitive physical home media editions, every misstep in the "pixel peeping" department (aka scrutinizing for encode flaws) and in a more general sense (DNR, upscales, Fake HDR,…) hurts the legacy of the film on home video more than it serves it to be honest. Films are then remembered for this look.

Especially because the (German) market is so oblivious to these avoidable happenings (obviously meaning when labels interfere and alter ready-made masters), I think we must point them out as much and as ferocious as possible. Even if it just helps a few people "waking up" once in a while, it’s worth it. Believe it or not, two years ago I didn’t have the slightest idea about any of this and bought Turbine, Capelight etc. and had zero reservations. I was in the worst group - on the German forums, blind-buying and not aware of the issues. Now I couldn’t be happier to be on the other side, so to speak.

If they upscaled an old telecine for a UHD release then that's inexcusable. However as for reworking very problematic older masters for standard Blu-ray releases, I don't think that's egregious at all. Obviously we'd all prefer fresh new scans from scratch but that's not always an option and dare I say that their touched up versions of DragonHeart and Twister look better than the previous releases that were from already processed masters (granted, that's just from viewing CAH comparisons and issues may pop up in motion).

These guys went above and beyond in order to: get Psycho released uncut, get Cronenberg's Crash to make its HD debut, present The Hills Have Eyes with the proper grade which Arrow failed to do for their remastered Blu-ray (their UHD is fixed) and correct the horrible framing job for Hellraiser III which Arrow didn't do and even made up ridiculous excuses for (which they are now only sorting via stealth fix for their UHD release).

No company is perfect, and every company has ****ed up at some point. Turbine have done some fantastic and important work, it's not like they are just some company happy to churn out crap as they've put a lot more effort into many of these films which the studios and other labels didn't even attempt to do.

All four covers appear to be gone now, presumably a keepcase will follow as with Pitch Black.

Heh, and if people want to see me complaining about what a UK label has produced then head on over to the SS Picnic at Hanging Rock thread(s). Geoffy didn't like that one, no sir, and he told his Second Sight overlords as such. It wasn't their call though, they were just reproducing what the director and DP had ultimately approved which is the cornerstone of their approach to their work (strange notion, huh?). And sometimes you're gonna get delivered a dud and there's nothing you can do about it (though they did chase up a fully approved HDR master for The VVitch).

It's funny though, I've never come down on either side of the 'directorial intent' argument w/ref to TCM's HDR grades (how could there be, as Hooper's dead, Jim). Shit, I'd never even seen the fookin movie before doing a bit of uncredited consultancy on it for SS, yet it keeps being referenced as glorious whataboutery in a desperate points-scoring effort.

But I do realise how mega-douchey I am towards turbine and how tiresome it must be, so I'll keep my comments to the respective threads in future (I'm sure there'll be more to come re: fake HDR, fake upscaled 4K and whatnot). Enjoy your turbine Fear and Loathings, y'all!

No problem at all regarding Picnic as it’s exactly like you said: They got what was approved and ready-made for them to put on disc. I’d rather have that than the other way round.

As SS do generally excellent work, I found it very nice to read that they’ve sold out their LE of Picnic. I thought they’d surely sit on them thanks to Weir and co.‘s mutilations but nope, they’re all gone apparently. Other labels would take the bad things away from that, SS are probably just glad that they can finally move on with it without suffering a loss.

Since I bought the Arrow BD LE, I think I'll get a Turbine Keep Case in the future, and frankenstein the Discs into the Arrow. Would love to have the Gonzo doc from Turbine. The Arrow BD LE contains the Steadman doc and a Steadman short movie.
