Warner Bros Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman | Directed by Tim Burton

Source: Deadline

Tim Burton To Direct Gillian Flynn Scripted Reimagining Of ‘Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman’ For Warner Bros
February 1, 2024 - Anthony D'Alessandro & Peter White

EXCLUSIVE: In the wake Barbie racking up eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture and becoming Warner Bros‘ highest grossing movie of all-time at $1.44 billion, here’s another female power event project that’s in the works under the Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy administration.

We understand that Tim Burton is attached to direct Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, a reimagined telling of the 1958 Warner Bros. movie classic, which Primetime Emmy nominee Gillian Flynn is writing.

The original sci-fi cult classic made for a reported $88K starred Allison Hayes as a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an alien triggers her to grow into a giantess, complicating her marriage which is already in turmoil no thanks to her philandering husband.

Burton has delivered reimagined ’50s sci-fi movies before for a mass audience, that being 1996’s Mars Attacks (which was actually based on the Topps trading cars) and featured an ensemble cast of Jack Nicholson, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Danny DeVito, Michael J. Fox and more. The movie grossed over $101M at the global box office.

Burton is producing Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Kai Dolbashian is an EP.

Burton has the sequel to his 1988 Warner Bros. blockbuster, Beetlejuice, coming out on Sept. 6; the pic receiving the title today of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 2024 A.D.

In directing feature credits alone, Burton has racked up $4.1 billion at the global box office off such hits as Alice in Wonderland, Planet of the Apes, Batman, Batman Returns, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He is repped by WME.

Recently, it was announced that Flynn would adapt her other novel, Dark Places, as an HBO limited series. She will serve as co-creator, co-showrunner and writer of the series.

Flynn, a former Entertainment Weekly reporter, adapted her own novel, Gone Girl, for the big screen, which David Fincher directed. The movie grossed over $369M worldwide and saw its lead actress Rosamund Pike land an Oscar nom. Flynn also adapted her own debut novel, Sharp Objects, into an HBO limited series which landed her a Primetime Emmy nom in limited series. Flynn also created the Prime Video series Utopia and wrote the Steve McQueen thriller movie, Widows, starring Viola Davis, Liam Neeson, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Carrie Coon, and Elizabeth Debicki. Flynn is repped by WME, Theresa Kang, and Jackoway Austen.

It's Burton, it's not another live-action Disney thing (though the two he directed were fine), so I'm in.

I am so down for Burton to dabble back in 50's style Sci-Fi goodness.

Plus the original story is right up his "character rejected by everyone for not being perfect" alley.

If it is done in the style of Mars Attacks it could be fabulous.

I would have hoped it would have been more an Ed Wood style thing where it's about the behind the scenes of making such a silly B-Movie

Either way, Tim Burton has never really disappointed me so i'm open

Well, if Tim Burton will be directing a remake of Attack Of The 50 Ft. Woman (1958), consider me "cautiously optimistic" regarding the end result of this project.
He's a lifelong die-hard fan of classic horror movies, monsters, and schlocky b-films so at least there's a better chance of this being a loving homage to a bygone era of cinema rather than yet another soulless Hollywood cash-grab remake.
Just look at his work such as Vincent (1982), Frankenweenie (1984), Ed Wood (1994), & Mars Attacks! (1996).
If he can create something with a similar kind of atmosphere and aesthetic, we will all be in for a much needed cinematic "breath of fresh air".

Personally, I'm hoping that a film like this could even help ignite a whole new wave/generation of "monster kids".
Or at least encourage and convince people to go check out and actually watch (and hopefully enjoy) all the older films of this variety in general.
Monsters seem to be having a very difficult time captivating the younger generations' interest within the 21st century.
I guess it's just nearly impossible for campy black-and-white films to compete with video games, superheroes, anime, and social media. "Sad to say".
Anyway, whatever it takes to generate enough new interest in order to have the remaining bunch of 1950s horror/sci-fi films finally get proper restorations and Blu-ray releases.
