I knew all those drugs I took in my youth would catch up with me someday. I just hallucinated a post about a Gilligan Island movie coming to UHD.

I thought the previous blu-ray (also from them?) was problematic? Missing dialogue snippets, etc? Is this from a different source than the blu-ray?

EDIT: From their site listing:

"For the first time scanned in 4K from a 16mm print and presented in native 24p frame rate. ALL previous copies were 60i standard def analog recordings, copied & re-copied, some with pieces missing including dialogue & music cues."

Yeah, immensely different source with a huge improvement based on their Youtube clip. It's still poor, but it's likely the best we'll ever see, and in the proper framerate and nothing missing. This is the one to get if you've ever wanted to own this. I might just have to go for it.

The previous Blu-ray used the best available analog elements edited together & upscaled. (While it was incomplete, it was the best looking & sounding version available at that time.) This new version was scanned in 4K from a 16mm film print.

Yes, the clip on your site looks quite impressive considering the rarity of this film and the trouble it's had with sources.

Disappointed though about it not being a pressed disc. How is the compatibility and expected longevity of a burned UHD? UHD players are finicky as it is. And if there's a playback issue, I can't even rip the UHD like I could if necessary like a blu-ray, since most drives don't support UHDs. That's what would hold me back from ordering this - my concern over the playability of this burned UHD, and it's expected lifespan.

I do have some burned DVDs that are very old and still play and read okay, but I do worry about them getting on in age, and UHDs are a different beast.

I wonder if a pressed blu-ray would be a better option than a burned UHD, since it would still be from the 4k-scan and likely be pretty close to what the UHD would look like anyways?

So does this film work well on its own or do you need to be a diehard Gilligan fan? I used to watch the series at my grandmother's house back in the 90s when they repeated it nonstop but I gather this is a different animal since it appeared so many years after the show ended. This also must be a pressed disc, right, since it's a UHD?

No, unfortunately the cost of pressing a UHD disc (and required third-party authoring and licensing) is far, far higher and wouldn't be feasible for a limited release like this. As for the quality of the movie it basically explains itself as Gilligan's Island was (as most classic TV) episodic in nature & not dependent on story arcs or convoluted lore.

So, the UHD disc is going to be a burned disc? What about the blu-ray, is it pressed or burned?

What licensing? This is a public domain release.

If they’re needing subtitles, opensubtitles.org [surprisingly] has English and Portuguese subs for the movie: https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/sea.../idmovie-68434

I have no idea if they’re correct though.
