The TV-Show "Homicide: Life on the Street" which ran on NBC from 1993 to 1999 is coming to streaming according to David Simon. Simon wrote the book, which the show was based on and was a writer and producer on the show. Until now the show hasn't been available on streaming plattforms, because of music rights issues.
According to a Twitter-Post from Simon "... NBC has managed to finally secure the music rights necessary to sell Homicide: Life On The Streets to a streaming platform". The webside TVLine.com confirmed Simon's tweet with Universal. The studio also mentioned, that the series is being remastered in HD and UHD. Addressing a new social media post by David Simon, author of the 1991 novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, a rep for NBCUniversal confirms for TVLine, "We’re currently in the midst of resolving the music rights issues for Homicide: Life on the Street and remastering the series to HD and UHD (for the first time)." The show starred among others Daniel Baldwin, Richard Belzer, Andre Braugher, Clarkson Johnson, Yaphet Kotto, Melissa Leo, Jon Polito, Kyle Secor and Ned Beatty. https://twitter.com/AoDespair/status...19920939635097 https://tvline.com/news/how-to-watch...ne-1235100197/ |

They didn't replace any of the music on the DVDs, did they? Cause I'm thinking, even if all the music's not there for the streaming, some enterprising young pirate could probably just use the audio from the DVDs

Brilliant show, I’ll be gutted if they force widescreen on us.

It may have been a widescreen-safe production, as prime-time drama shows started to do that, around the early 90's. If that's the case, we won't have anything to complain about, though we simply don't know anything until we are presented with something to watch.

Hopefully at least a Blu-Ray box set is made available. I would love to retire my file cabinet DVD set after almost 20 years.
Like many shows of the time, Homicide was shot on film (specifically Super 16), but post was often done on SD video. With luck, that original film has been scanned and this isn’t simply an upsample. We’ll know more soon. If this is true, it will be similar to my experience watching The X-Files. With all the details restored, it felt like looking into a window of the '90s, almost as if I were watching it for the first time again. I've watched Homicide:LOTS completely 3 times and there's some dark, grainy scenes that hopefully will be cleared up. I'm glad the music is being kept "as is." The music choices were important to the storyline and wouldn't be easily replaced. |
