interesting quote i hadn't seen before...

Quote:
"Marketing was a weak point for Toshiba. We learned a lot from HD DVD. Strengthening marketing will continue to be an issue for us going forward," the source said.

the quote rings true... the marketing on the site itself is a bit childish, and for the most part really doesn't show what hd dvd is. the name itself sucks. the marketing group set it to be just a slight upgrade to the dvd standard. they just sticky taped HD infront of DVD and threw in 6 more gigs to the platter and there it was. everything with hddud was of "marginal signifigance". next generation should always step it up a few more rungs than two.

sorry toshibia, better luck next time. every thing is a lot more "actionier" when it's "blurayier"... you failed, suck it up.

They sure spent a lot of money to learn how to market. They always could've asked Sony to show them how. Would've saved them a lot of money

Marketing wasn't the problem, 30gb's and miniscule bandwidth was.
Blu-ray just had a better product....PERIOD.

"We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified.
A couple of observations here:

1.) They've entered the "final stage" means they've been planning this exit for a bit now, probably since CES and the Warner announcement.

2.) It says they're making an "exit from the next generation DVD business." Does this mean Toshiba has NO PLANS to make a Blu-ray player?

I kinda feel sorry for Toshiba but then again they started this shit. I just hate seeing plants close and people loose hundreds of millions of dollars.

The problem is Toshiba started this whole thing with MS's backing. HD DVD should have never launched. Period. I just hope someone at Toshiba is held accountable for their madness.

This means they're shutting down the division

They'll come out with a combo player within 12 months guaranteed

I hope you're right, WW. As has been discussed elsewhere on this forum, they probably have a proof-of-concept locked up somewhere. It was sorta shocking to read they're shutting down an entire plant... jeez. But if they do end up making a BD and/or combo player, they'll probably kit it with a CEM.

"A source at Toshiba confirmed an earlier report by public broadcaster NHK that it was getting ready to pull the plug. .............................. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week."

That sum it all up.
Hey, where is the champagne?
