I have no idea, but I would eat a baby to have the entire series of Angel on Blu. I got rather addicted to that show, but ironically I've only seen Buffy like once or twice. And welcome to the forums!

I asked the Fox Insider about their general approach to older TV shows in his insider thread a while back, but he has never come back to answer any of the questions.

My feeling is that it's highly unlikely we'll see Buffy or Angel on Blu-ray any time soon, due to the amount of expensive work that would be needed to do it properly. The first two seasons of Buffy were shot on 16mm film anyway, and people wouldn't be impressed with how they'd look on Blu-ray, though they would still look a lot better than the bitrate-starved DVDs.

Seriously, they would need a lot of work to be able to release an even half decent HD release. The digital effects were done in shitty interlaced SD NTSC. The current DVDs you can't even get a true progressive signal from. In addition, the first two years were shot on 16mm, and are as grainy as hell.

I hate to say this, but Buffy and Angel had an incredibly loyal fanbase. More so than Star Trek.

Buffy was one of the earliest TV shows to get a DVD release, and it raked in millions for Fox. Why do you think there are so many editions? I can see this happening.

You are right. I remember an article, it was one of the first tv shows to sell a million copies on dvd. It definitely deserves to be released.

I don't mind that grain as I think it lends a bit more to the overall atmosphere of the series back in those early days.

I can't wait to see both of these going HD, even if the picture quality can't be four or five star-level.

Also as per director intent Buffy is 4x3 even if it was filmed in a Wider ratio, in widescreen you can see boom mic and camera in the frame..

These are the only two television shows that are an absolute automatic purchase for me if they come out on Blu, pretty much regardless of price point if they're done reasonably well. I bought Lost season 3 on impulse recently, but whether or not I will keep it is up in the air depending on whether or not the series gets a proper ending (ala Buffy) or a crappy one (ala Angel, Alias). Battlestar Galactica DVD and Blu purchases will also be on hold till I see if I get burned on that ending as well.

Basically I've learned that with any series I like I should expect to get burned by the studios (I won't be buying Supernatural, for example, till I've seen the whole thing). I treasure Buffy for actually being a complete series. I wish Angel had ended properly (without the shortened timeframe and cross-network casting restrictions), but I still like it if only because it gives me more of that universe.

I know Buffy wasn't shot for widescreen, but I don't really care if they smart stretch it, black bar it, or what not, if I can get a much better picture quality wherever possible. Even if they couldn't do much to help with Season 1 (fugly), if they did their best I'd be all over it. Hoping for this may be a long shot, but if they want my money this is how they're going to have to get it. Otherwise it'll just be movies, and now that I know which DVDs I never watched (ie Star Wars) those will be much harder sales.

I totally agree. Also, they are releasing much older versions of series like I Dream of Jeannie which was made AGES before Buffy.. so all this negative talk, that it WONT happen... get real. Anything can happen... Buffy and Angel both had a huge fanbase and sold a lot of copies... with the new technology now, the networks would be completely STUPID not to release them in Blu-Ray...

Angel would be easiest to get on Blu-Ray, they just screwed up with the first season and would need to get that 16x9. If the DVDs look that great, just imagine what a decent Blu-Ray treatment would do!

Hold up, I'm confused. Are you saying you got a source that it's coming in the fall, or are you saying that it's just a false alarm? Also are you referring to Buffy, Angel, or Firefly?

I'm very sensitive to false hope here, don't be cruel.

If Whedon said that season 1-3 were framed only in 4x3 does it mean that it is only the broadcasting printing or in the 16mm films THERE IS all the area?
