I have the Germany release (also pretty sure I have a HDDVD of it in the loft) seems there's not much difference that I can see from that review (I haven't seen the disc). Shout! seem to have something a bit better certainly in the extras https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-G.../43886/#Review

Obviously, the film needs a new scan (if the elements are there) but who's going to pay?

I'd rather the money was spent on a new 4K scan of Peckinpah's original. I'd swap my HDDVD player for that.

The review needs to be clearer about the cut status of the film. As far as I am concerned the R-rated cut is worth ZERO STARS.

I bought the UK edition of The Getaway, I thought the encoding looked really mediocre at times, so I’ve rebought the German disc again, after selling my original copy. I also noticed 2 audio pops in the audio on the UK disc, which put me off it further, unless it was a glitch with my setup.

Will The Getaway be the uncut (minute longer sex scene) version remains the question. We had that in '94 so it'll be annoying if we get saddled with the R-rated cut.

You'd like to think that it would be a port of the recent Shout release, but Icon put it through the BBFC last year for streaming and looks like that was the 115m version. That coupled with the 15 rating probably means we're getting the short end of the stick.

A really good film. I’ve had the German Blu-ray for a few years, I might buy this if it’s the uncut version, but I dunno, it’s only 40 odd seconds of Kim Basinger’s bits & bobs

Excellent! I did ask someone at Kaleidoscope/Icon if they were considering both of these, and they did respond to say they were definitely thinking about Unlawful Entry and The Getaway. I did also mention Affliction, but unfortunately they ignored that suggestion!

PS: I also said they should seriously consider Ghost World if possible, as they still have the UK rights! Would certainly go down well and could be a collector's edition too.

I hope Baldwin's current legal troubles don't give Icon cold feet about releasing The Getaway, especially with that cover...

I hate that cover, it's always looked like a really dodgy photoshop job but there's something even worse looking about that specific version of the cover.

Indeed. It's close to the US poster, but the lighter blue background does it no favours at all.

I always liked the UK quad, but it sells a very different movie:

Here's a list of titles I found through a copyright entry that Shout got in a bundle deal. It's possible Icon has most, if not all of these too. They've already released or planning 4 of them so far (I've bolded them below).

There are hundreds of other titles listed in various entries, but I imagine some of these are just for their various VOD/Streaming services.

Additionally it looks like SF got rights to The Boy, so I guess we can expect 4K releases for those.

The Getaway was rated again this week for physical media by the BBFC

Even though it's still a 15 & the runtime is identical to the VOD submission, the BBFC description certainly sounds like the unrated version:

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
strong sex, violence, language, threat, sexual threat

THE GETAWAY is US crime drama, from 1994, in which an ex-con and his wife go on the run when a robbery goes wrong.

violence
Sequences of strong violence include shootings, fist-fights and bombings with resultant blood spurts and bloody aftermath detail. A man is tortured with a corkscrew for information.

threat and horror
There is strong threat throughout, including gun and knife threat, with some occasionally being directed towards women.

language
Use of strong language ('f**k') is accompanied by moderate ('*****') and milder terms such as 'shit', 'piss', 'ass', 'bugger' and 'damn'. A man makes the middle finger gesture.

sex
There are scenes of strong sex with breast and buttock nudity and sight of pubic hair. Verbal sex references are also strong.

sexual violence and sexual threat
A man coerces a woman into having off-screen sex with him in order to help save her husband. During a robbery, an armed man lifts up the skirt of a terrified woman, who is cowering on the floor, in a sexually threatening manner. At gunpoint, a man makes aggressive sexual advances towards a woman who subsequently proceeds to willingly have sex with him.

A man is seen hanging after taking his own life.

I posted this in Shout’s The Getaway thread in response to someone’s question re:the version Icon Distribution have streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK, but might be useful to copy and paste here too -

Quote:

As Bud pointed out above, they have resubmitted to the BBFC this week….. but the runtime (115m 12s) appears to be identical to their recently submitted streaming presentation. Likewise the content advice is a copy and paste for all entries.

The unrated Shout disc runs 115m 43s. And bear in mind that Icon have added their logo to the start of the streaming version, artificially inflating the runtime of their r-rated cut by a few extra seconds.

They could well end up pulling the unrated out of the bag for the physical release at the last second, but it doesn’t look good. My advice would be to not buy day one and instead wait for someone who does to confirm which version we’re actually getting.

I know a member here (rapta) actually reached out to Icon re:the largo catalogue and got a response. Might be worth reaching out again if they have the contact info to see if Icon are even aware there’s a longer version. In my experience, a lot of these labels don’t know as much about these movies and their various incarnations as the fans do (e.g. Kino’s release of Death Machine was going to be just the severely truncated r-rated cut, until myself and others brought the existence of a longer version to their attention).

Hope that helps.
