Australia Suspiria 4K UHD (2018)

Imprint is releasing Suspiria (2018) in a packed 3-disc special edition, and what will presumably be a totally English-friendly edition, unlike the German UHD which apparently had issues with subtitles and onscreen text:

https://viavision.com.au/shop/suspir...ollection-356/

Release 30 October 2024

Suspiria (2018) – Imprint Collection #356

Limited Edition 4K UHD & Blu-ray 3-Disc Hardbox with art cards including brand NEW Special Features – 1500 copies only!

Inspired by Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian film of the same name, director Luca Guadagnino (Challengers) takes on the classic story in a terrifying reinvention starring Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades Of Grey), Mia Goth (MaXXXine), Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass), and the legendary Tilda Swinton in three roles.

A darkness swirls at the centre of a world-renowned dance company: one that will engulf the troupe’s artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Featuring an incredible original score by Thom Yorke, the lead singer of Radiohead.

Sad that there are no deleted scenes included (and there are several that were filmed, some glimpsed in the trailer).

Do they releases standard editions as well, once the limited version sells out?

I've only bought a couple of their boxsets:
On the Beach - 2022
Jessica Lange - 2023
no standard editions of those yet

AUD$154.95 with shipping... yeah... no. I'll stick with the German one until Shout or a UK label puts it out.

It'll almost certainly be under $100 US at Diabolik. It'll be a decent option for American customers.

I seem to remember you said you're in Europe, so if it's more expensive there, hope you all get a local edition soon too.

I mean I'm pretty happy with the German 4K, the issues it has don't bother me too much, however I'd be willing to a upgrade to a more "proper" release, but definitely not at this price.

I also don't think what's being offered here is worth 100 bucks, but that's just my opinion.

Already have the UK Bluray from Mubi but I am quite tempted by this.

With this now being a MGM title, I have a feeling we’ll see a U.S. release sooner rather than later.

I thought it was Lionsgate (I know nothing, just recalling)? I'm grabbing this one only because I don't want to risk missing out again.

Lionsgate was acting as home video distributor for Amazon Studios titles. That has now lapsed.

It’s now Amazon MGM Studios. Warner is the primary home video distributor for new releases and catalog titles are still being licensed out to boutiques.

Gotcha. Sadly I will have to take the risk since the Imprint release is limited in quantity.

I can only hope for all of you that Imprint don’t f*ck up the 4K encode. Their BDs are utterly, completely TERRIBLE, as are Umbrella’s. I can’t put it another way. There’s probably only one authoring house in Australia as all BDs I’ve gotten from both labels so far have the same blocking patterns across the films. Grain is noisy and swarms around. If you pause, you’ll see huge blocking patterns even when discs are otherwise barebones.

I’m lucky that I don’t need any of the subtitles for all the spoken languages in Suspiria, hence I’m good with the Plaion but the demand for the film should really make Imprint step up their game drastically.

These Australian labels have released a number of UHDs recently and I’m yet to stumble across a professional, trustworthy review for any of them. (Imprint did a UHD set of Sam Peckinpah’s Cross of Iron which I’ve got but they wisely used the exact same disc that Studiocanal released in the UK, so that can’t be used for reference. Possession also apparently looks like the Le chat qui fume UHD).

The Koch 4K, going by the caps, is IMHO coming with a colour space error (hence the teal and boosted reds) - the subtitles aren't the only issue of the German release.

Having said that, I'm not spending that money (~100 EUR excl. tax I suppose) on the Aussie for a movire I've never seen either.

Which you can correct if your TV allows you to change color gamut, from Rec2020 to P3.

Yes, you can, if you can and know about the issue. But it's annoying and then there's still the other issues (wrong subs (colour and typo), too bright subs and missing titles). The German one remains a borked release.

Interesting, I’ve rewatched the film a few weeks ago using the Koch 4K disc and didn’t feel that anything is off (subtitles are obviously wrong). I also didn’t notice any teal or unnatural reds (á la Vinegar Syndrome lobster red). I’ll have to look at these caps again.

Edit: I’ve put in my disc again and can see what’s on the caps. I must say this is very surprising as the film looks absolutely stunning to my eyes just as it’s presented on the Koch with the color space error. It’s not so drastically off that it irked me while watching. The occasional "teal" blue-greenish hue in skies feels film print-like to me and that’s likely why it’s not bothersome.

It has been said that the Koch 4K is missing some credits at the beginning or something like that.

The simple fact is that there’s no definitive release of Suspiria, whether on BD or UHD, and this is unlikely to change.

Mind you that I can only go by the caps, but I'm sure it's wrong.
