Default Samsung audio hookups

hey kids... since i have my sammy now, what would be the best method to hook it up? use optical/coaxial or 5.1 hookups? bitstream or pcm? etc etc. my receiver does not have hdmi so optical or 5.1 are my two options. any input/help/feedback is appreciated.

ok, reading through the manual a bit. funny how that can sometimes help. if you use the sammy as a DVD player as well, the analog outs are worthless. a digital signal will not be output via analog (thus only playing the front stage) so you wil have to use the optical or coax for full surround (thus my comment in JTK's rant regarding stage impact w/ the rears).

as i noticed on my receiver, when playing BR's, if i select an uncompressed pcm track it simply displays PCM on the front. if i select a dolby track, the dolby digital light comes on and it does it's dolby thing. so, as far as i can tell, it can pass the PCM signal no problem. my receiver can handle 96khz digital signal which JTK asked about in his thread. i have turned downsampling off on the sammy (why i receive an hdmi audio error on my t.v. when turning on the sammy) so i can get the 96khz (doubt my t.v. supports that range) and am using bitstream for when i have a dolby/dts/dd+/dts-ma signal (i know my receiver can't handle that).

edit: here's a link to JTK's rant in case curious what was being said.

You cant get 5.1PCM over coax or fiberoptic. It is downconverted to two channels. Your receiver is probably just adding some kind of post processing like IIX.
The easiest way for you would be to use the analog.... the only problem with that is the Sammy wont decode standard Dolby/DTS on regular DVD's.

Multichannel analogs are the only way you're going to get the new hotness of that Sammy player in terms of the new audio codecs.

It's either that or upgrade to at least an HDMI 1.1 receiver.

You're not going to get anything past 48 khz or DD 640 at best over optical. There's physically no way that optical or coax connection can handle it. Of course, the TV isn't going to handle or do squat for you on this front.

Use optical for DVD and use the multichannel analogs for BD's.

for some stupid reason i had assumed the bandwidth issues only related to the new lossless audio codecs and not pcm. now that i think about it, that is a ludicrous conclusion. anyway, thanks for the input. my current setup is prob as good as it gets without dropping another couple of K

For sure. You're good to go right now thanks to multichannel analogs on your receiver and the Samsung.

I'm the one that's got a bridge to cross.

you were completely right. i just turned off the post processing and got only 2 channel (didn't even realize it was on). so you're both right and im stubborn. now, i'm using the analogs. i just have to turn the volume up a bit. so be it.
