Canada Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon 4K

Read the 6th paragraph

But there are still more catalog titles that I’ve been quietly advocating behind-the-scenes for, and I’m very pleased today to reveal that another of them is finally coming to 4K Ultra HD in the months ahead: Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon (1975)! I don’t have a street date yet, but my best guess is that we’ll see it in July or August.

Oh hell yes! The way this is lit could be a masterpiece showcase of HDR if done right.

He doesn't state Warner or Criterion, but I gotta think it'll be an upgrade of the Criterion release.

Feels like it’ll be Criterion since it wasn’t on the leaked image of Warner Ultimate Collector’s Editions for the year and I have a hard time believing they’ll just release a standard edition.

If it's a WAC disc we might get another FiM encode like The Searchers. Either way, praying the audio doesn't get nuked. It escaped on Criterion's Blu somehow.

What do you mean about the audio being nuked?

Criterion has a tendency to overuse tools for filtering, equalization, and other audio “corrections” which introduces detail loss.

In short, their tracks tend to sound weaker and/or less robust than unfiltered releases of the same movie in other regions or on earlier formats where the audio was sourced from the same stems.

Fabulous news. I was hoping it would be Warner though. Just feels right for them to do it.

Regardless, this film is truly a work of art and should have been on 4K ages ago.

Warner Archive maybe, but the studio label? Yuck.

I'm worried about Warner too because they did it to The Searchers if I recall correctly. Sometimes these studios just can't leave well alone because they have bad taste.

Never expected we would get Barry Lyndon on UHD before Eyes Wide Shut.

I’m glad I never got the Criterion. And I’ve been tempted.

I’ve learned my lesson to never buy a 4k mastered Blu Ray from Criterion, or really in general. I bought a few before they began releasing actual 4k discs unfortunately.

Well, it depends on the title, of course. On titles like Nothing But A Man or Blast of Silence, I wouldn't expect a 4K to come out any time soon, if ever—not that they're not deserving, it just doesn't seem profitable at this point.

Titles like The Parallax View or M, I can totally see them upgrading at some point.

Giaochino Rossini once said of Wagner, "He has beautiful moments, but awful quarters of an hour."

That's how I feel about this movie. I want to like it, but the thought of watching it again feels like a chore.

We've known this was coming for months, it was one of the titles listed on that screenshot of leaked titles that included the NOES collection.
