Default Can cheap or old dvd players damage a dvd?

Im going on a caravan holiday tomorrow and theres a dvd player there. Its more than likely one of those thats built into the side of the TV, it was last time.

If the player is ancient or not been looked after properly is it likely to permanently damage any DVDs I bring?

Thinking of taking some british Comedy DVDs for the evening buy am a bit paranoid.

Thanks.

I've never had any optical disc player in my life damage a disc except slot loading car players, they always used to scratch across my CDs over time back in the day.

Would that be more due to the car going over bumps and causing scratches?

Nah, the scratches were across the discs from going in and out those things have those soft brushes on them but they aren't so soft I guess.

The only time I witnessed a disc damage a player was a situation where someone placed a rental sticker on one side of the disc which threw-out the balance while it was spinning at 1400 rpm.

Slot loading video game consoles as well. They can get really dirty and many people keep them close to or even sitting on the floor. I remember noticing scratches on dvds from the PS3.

The PS3 is surprisingly the only thing that didn't choke on DualDiscs I owned. I put a DualDisc in my 5-disc CD changer once and the noise it made horrorified me. If you aren't familiar the DualDisc was a CD glued to a DVD so it feels like a brick. I resorted to ripping those at one point and never playing the discs again.

Don't remind me! I remember buying a Talking Heads box set when I was in college and trying to rip those to my MacBook. I didn't think those discs were ever going to eject.

As long as the DVD's are the same region as the player you should be fine.
Older disc players don't damage discs the way older videotape players chewed up tapes.

Yeah. I mean, I can handle a dvd freezing up or not playing due the the laser being dusty etc, as long as when I get home and play them in my own player theyre fine.
