I saw the interview where the director said "I think we're doing 3D," but I haven't seen any official confirmation since then. The trailer does not have any mention of 3D. There is no stereographic supervisor or 3D conversion company listed on the IMDB page. I've also been searching the websites of 3D conversion companies (such as SDFX Studios) and have not Tron: Ares listed anywhere.
So, I suppose it's still possible that this could get a 3D conversion, but the process would have to start ASAP. |

What made it good are the stunning visuals and Daft Punk's score. Both of which will be amazing in 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. |

RealD posted the trailer on their FB page. Seems like an official confirmation to me.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the most recent example that comes to mind. The RealD social accounts were heavily promoting that movie with trailers, posters, etc., but it was never released in 3D. Last edited by ryanmcv; 04-10-2025 at 08:00 PM. |

I hope Disney does not pass up a 3D conversion for Tron 3.
The challenge with converting this film? Crosstalk/ghosting of the bright neon lines against the dark night backgrounds. Like a bright candle flickering in a pitch dark room, if you have it set to mild 3D, there is hardly any noticeable ghosting. But as soon as that layer is set to strong 3D, it'll jump into heavy ghosting with 1 ghosted image replica on each side of the center flame. One way to fix this is post editing, by adjusting the convergence parameter (like zooming in or out sort of) until the three images become one, at the expense of altering the other layers in 3D space. Otherwise, because of the dark background, there is nothing for the ghosted strong 3D images to hide into, had it been a brighter, complex background texture. Modern 3D glasses cannot filter out ALL light with the stereo 3D polarized glasses effect, active or passive, and so that is where the ghosting image can be seen. Even when looking in a mirror in a bright room, if you close one eye with your RealD 3D glasses on, you'll see up close that your eye can just about be seen beneath the darkened lens of the other eye. I think this is a possible reason Tron Legacy's native 3D really didn't push the 3D like you'd see in a classic Golden Age or Silver Age 3D film with very strong 3D. Compared to those films, Tron Legacy's 3D is mild despite being filmed in 3D. The strongest 3D shot is when the Program is assigning Games early in the Grid zone introduction as Sam enters the computer realm. On topic, the trailer looks cool for Tron 3, very much looking forward to Tron as a big fan. Saw Tron 2 three times in theaters. Twice in 3D to make sure the Cinemark projection was accurate by going to Regal 3D to confirm it was mild 3D. 3rd time was with others who wanted to see it in 2D. Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor's soundtrack sounds awesome so far. Not easy as the Tron 2 soundtrack was great IMO. |

It would be a shame if this sequel doesn’t get converted. The movie looks fun, and Joachim Rønning has directed multiple 3D blockbusters for Disney already. Hope to hear real confirmation in the near future.
