It needs to be live action.

Why? The Super Mario Bros movies were animated and they did fine

Not happening. The cinematic version of Donkey Kong was established in the first CG Mario movie, so they’ll be continuing him in that style. I would expect Seth Rogen to return as his voice.

“Fine” is an understatement. At this point, the Mario cinematic universe is officially CG and anything different would be met with disappointment from fans.

Yeah I mean I would be ok with live-action bookends for the movie but even that seems unnecessary

Brilliant idea. Donkey Kong is the character best suited to a spin-off film.

Why would anyone in the world want a dk movie where you absolutely know Donkey Kong wouldn't even be the main character and instead it'll be a human protagonist? They would play it safe and have it still be pg, and we at least we have king kong to fulfill our live action gorilla mayhem desires.

Why do I instantly feel like Dwayne Johnson is going to be in this?

Nintendo and Universal’s partnership is nothing new but it hadn’t struck me until now that there’s some irony in Universal releasing a Donkey Kong movie. The Universal vs. Nintendo court case from 1983 was a significant moment in Nintendo’s history.

I don't think anyone should be surprised by this. It felt like a lot of things have been trying to lead up to this, like DK having a notable role in the first movie and not a mario sequel, a whole theme park expansion based off him, and his first big, new, and ambitous video game in over a decade. Nintendo have been pushing our loveable gorilla a ton as of late, when it felt like he was being pushed to the side for almost a entire decade.

It's about time too. Donkey Kong should be seen as second to Mario in terms of Nintendo franchises.

You would think. Juts not sure how to stretch it into a feature film. Or a full franchise. But, maybe they can.

If they can give a better voice I would be for it.

Seth Rogan seems to have a lot of pull with Producers for some reason. I agree, he's not a good match for Donkey Kong's voice. I would think a Gorilla would have a deeper voice, like in real life.

He's really just using his own voice. It's not terrible or anything, but just nothing great either. I really wish they would just hire cartoon animation voice actors who specialize in that.

Like how they hired Frank Welker to do voices in movies. So many producers are convinced that people want name recognition of famous actors as voices, but it doesn't draw in audiences as the movie Delgo proved, which had a big star listing of voices in that film and it didn't even make a million dollars as very few went to go see it based on the movie itself. The movie, characters and story are what really get audience attention. Not who does the voices unless that star has a huge, loyal following that must see everything they're in. Like how Peyo tries to do with the Smurfs films, with Smurfette usually being a female pop star for some odd reason. She never sang in the classic series.

--------------------
Chris Pratt did better than I expected for Mario, so credit to him there. Charlie Day was an okay to good Luigi. Princess Peach was good. Jack Black, really good Bowser IMO.

It should be animated. A live action one is basically a King Kong movie, right?

It’s definitely a spinoff from the Mario movie so it’s gonna be animated.

However if it were a separate thing and they just wanted to make a DK movie it would be cool to see it in live action. It could be like live action Lion King.

I did like the scene between Mario and Kong of Donkey, as it showed the girders of red metal steel that Mario runs up in the Donkey Kong video game arcade.

I wish they could make a movie that looked like the video game world for at least one scene. Like instead of Pac Man interacting with the real world, have him in that Blue Maze with the black background and the ghosts after him as he chomps dots for example. But here, the Nintendo game.

Pixels did a scene exactly like that.
