Lewis Pullman and Maya Hawke to Star in Surrealist Rom-Com ‘Wishful Thinking’

Lewis Pullman and Maya Hawke will join forces for the surrealist relationship comedy “Wishful Thinking,” Variety can report exclusively.

Writer-director Graham Parkes will helm the film, about a volatile couple who discovers their emotional state has supernatural consequences on the world around them. The pair must decide whether to fight for their relationship or accept that their powerful connection might be doing more harm than good.

Pullman’s profile has risen considerably over his last few projects, including Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” (a.k.a. “The New Avengers”), “Top Gun: Maverick” and the acclaimed Apple Studios series “Lessons in Chemistry.” Hawke, a breakout from the sunsetting Netflix juggernaut “Stranger Things,” stole the show in the hugely profitable Pixar sequel “Inside Out 2” last year, in addition to roles in “Wildcat” and “Asteroid City.”

Highway 10, Buckwild and Pinky Promise are producing “Wishful Thinking.” Matt Smith and Dan Gedman will oversee for Highway 10, which also serves as financier. Pullman is overseeing for his new company Buckwild, launched with Graham Patrick Martin (“The Line”) and Cameron Fuller (“Drop”). Both Martin and Fuller are executive producing with Sarah Mather. Kara Durrett will produce for Pinky Promise, which just released Nick Kroll’s “I Don’t Understand You” and premiered Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut “Eleanor the Great” at Cannes in May.

Writer-director Parkes is an L.A. native who works in film and indie gaming at GoodbyeWorld Games, a label he started with childhood friends. The company’s first release, “Your Eyes,” was a BAFTA-winning cinematic narrative game created by Parkes. A follow-up, “Goodnight Universe,” will release this year.
