I grabbed the BFI edition a few years ago. Thought the transfer was excellent. Thought the film was excellent. Glad to see it's getting a US release.

Agreed. Own the box set, well worth poking one’s bugle.

Look how beautiful that is!

Was this a title that KLSC was releasing on Blu-ray and decided not to release on 4K for whatever reason? Or am I thinking of a similar film or something else starring Caine, from another studio…?

Yeah, same here with the BFI purchase. Unless this has some new extras or a better transfer, this will be an easy pass for me. The BFI release is simply outstanding.

Directed by Mike Hodges
Two-time Oscar® winner* Michael Caine rips into the role of Jack Carter in this legendary crime thriller marked by “brutal and gamy plot turns, excellent direction (and) a fast-moving screenplay” (Variety)! London mob strong-arm Carter is drawn north to Newcastle by his brother’s death-which he doesn’t believe is accidental. All to familiar with the ways of the mob, Carter single-mindedly, and single-handedly-tears into the local crime syndicate with terrifying precision and cold enjoyment, hunting the identity of the killer and then the killer himself. But what Carter doesn’t know is that corruption within the mob is widespread, high-ranked and may hit closer to home than he thinks! “The pace is relentless” lauded to L.A. Times, “and picks up momentum like a freight train barreling downgrade!” “An instant classic” agreed The New York Times. Presented here as meticulously restored and remastered in 2022 by the British Film Institute, with the added benefit of 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range, Caine’s masterful turn in GET CARTER is more exciting than ever.

It's a 3.5 hour 66 year old film shot on high fade Eastmancolor 65mm negative. Likely all the original 70mm release prints, and at least some later ones, were struck directly from that camera negative, which means lots of unfortunate handling.

So most likely the negative is in sad shape. That's going to be a major holdup.

Who knows about the state of the separate sound elements, which would be just as old.

Got the lovely BFI 4K but even if this WAC release isn't too different from that, I'll still buy it without hesitation, as this is such a great, great film and one of my all-time favourites. More than happy to have two copies.

Both Fidelity in Motion encodes but the difference is that the WAC is a dual edition 4K + BD and the BD is going to be Region A friendly. However, any of the BFI release extras that weren't produced in 2022 for that release (such as the 1971 doc on the second disc) will not be included.

So it's a matter of whether one prefers to get a dual edition at a very affordable price (as opposed to likely paying roughly $60 to have the 4K and BD), or those three extras that WAC's release won't have.

Also, the BFI has LPCM Mono audio while the WAC will have DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio, though it should verrrrrrrry sound similar if not exactly the same.

The new restoration is already done, I know because I saw it at the TCM Festival back in April. They're probably just saving it for a release around Easter.

Yeah it's been completed for some time now. Would rather it come from WAC than WBHE because 1) remastered BD as well, 2) FiM encoding.

Now, the question is: did WB apply their typical post-scan f**kery like they apparently did with THE SEARCHERS (which was apparently a WB master released by WAC, rather than a WAC master), or did they just properly restore BEN-HUR?
