i was kinda on board with the premise. felt different. but then the AWFUL CGI arrived and wow. they couldn't spend a LITTLE MORE on the vfx budget? even from cell phone angles? this is some sharknado level of bad vfx.
if you know you can't afford good vfx then at least pivot and go full camp? like said sharnado movies etc. from the trailer it looks like they're going for 100% serious |

Looks awful but unpopular opinion, Spielbergs movie reigned in the concept too much. Could have been epic spectacle but he wanted to make a more grounded thriller. It's a good film but I struggle to care once Robbins shows up.

totally agree and cruise's kids in the film were also so nauseating to watch too and cruise as a deadbeat dad was fun joke for about 5 mins ... could have been an epic film really..

I think the idea of doing it all through computer screens and cell phone video is interesting, almost like a modernization of the Orson Welles radio broadcast. But the effects are bad, the "data is their food" angle sounds stupid, and the story seems cliched and boring. Which sucks, because it's probably the only time anyone will make a movie like this, and they seem to be blowing it.

The shame of it is that nobody's done it with since 1953. Spielberg's take was fine, but didn't hit the mark for me. Close, but no cigar. The last two TV series were OK at best. I want a full-blown WAR of the Worlds, not "I want mom!" for two hours.

I've always loved H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, it’s one of my all-time favorite books. I’ve probably read it ten times since I was a kid. But in my opinion, only Spielberg ever truly did it justice.
He understood that the novel is essentially a horror story, an alien invasion seen from the ground level, through the eyes of someone constantly on the run. It’s a massive, world-ending event told with an intensely personal, intimate focus. When Spielberg updated the setting to modern times, it was completely in line with what the original novel did back in 1898, it was contemporary when it was first published. He nailed that sense of realism and chaos. I’ll never forget the awe and dread I felt when the first tripod emerged from the ground. It was the most thrilling theater experience I’d had since the T. rex first stepped out in Jurassic Park back in '93. Honestly, nothing since 2005 has wowed me quite like Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. It’s easily my favorite film of the last 25 years. As for this new version? It looks… fine, I guess. An interesting angle, sure. But I doubt I’ll ever care enough to watch it, especially since I barely made it through the trailer. That said, it did make me want to reread the book and revisit both the 1953 and 2005 versions. So at least there’s that! |

Having a slogan for the War of the Worlds movie that says "It's worse than you think" has to be either a funny pitch for a comedy movie, or a warning to stay away. The shaky camera style reminds me of the dreadful Battle of Los Angeles, which was an absolute mess of sloppy camerawork.
Ice Cube though, he's good in the movies I've seen him so at least that's decent. I see what the trailer seems about, mostly Ice Cube watching it all unfold on his laptop through video footage. Probably not my kind of movie. |
