Quote:
Spanish surrealist master Luis Buñuel’s fiendish tale of love gone wrong is among the most perverse and unsettling films he made during his two decades of exile in Mexico. Folding his own neuroses into an adaptation of Mercedes Pinto’s autobiographical novel, Buñuel crafts an expressionistically stylized nightmare in which a young woman (Delia Garcés) discovers that the outward sophistication of her new husband (Arturo de Córdova) masks disturbing depths of jealousy and paranoia. A characteristically raw indictment of religious and social hypocrisy, Él stands as the director’s greatest excursion into melodrama, a vivid portrayal of society’s inability to restrain the irrational urges of the human id.

Hadn't heard of this title until the new restoration started going around! Happy to see a US release.

A beautiful film from Mexico. Over 70 years old and it's still wonderful.

Amazing news.

Buñuel made some amazing movies during his exile in Mexico.

Would really love a 4k of Simón del Desierto - an unforgettable parable that seems to become more pertinent every year, and some of the best performances by Silvia Pinal and Claudio Brook ever committed to film (had a chance to watch Pinel live when she was starring in a Mame! revival in the early 80s - what a fabulous star!)

I just watched the trailer and the part where it shows a bell tower and them running up the stairs reminded me of "Vertigo" (1958). Even though this film is from 1953.

It is a common observation, so much so that lengthy critiques on the subject, such as these, are not uncommon. And it is well-known that Alfred Hitchcock vocally admired Luis Buñuel, purportedly calling him "the best director in the world" at a Hollywood party. (Presumably the famous "Director's Group Party" in November 1972, which George Cukor hosted at his house for Buñuel.)

(from top to bottom, left to right: Robert Mulligan, William Wyler, George Cukor, Robert Wise, Jean-Claude Carriere, and Serge Silverman. Billy Wilder, George Stevens, Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock, and Rouben Mamoulian.)
