Works for them, Toshiba will probably end up paying them some sort of penalty to break the contract... doubt they're going to keep shelling out the remainder of the 50 or 100 million (can't remember whether they got more than Paramount or less).

It's not like the industry hinges on them changing to BD anymore.
They likely figure they can get more money and change within a few months anyway.

Word is they are both preparing them, but they won't announce or release them until they have a settlement with Toshiba for the remaining money they are owed. If Toshiba drags this out, then both studios could really take a hit on the market for their initial greed.

Personally,

I hope this doesn't resolve too quickly so Paramount misses out on some potential HDM sales revenue. I have plenty of BD titles to buy from other studios and I'd like to see Paramount not get off too easy with "free money" at this point from Toshiba given their format-flipping which (unlike Warner) was based solely on payoff incentives even if it means perpetuating the format-war stalemate.

Not quite. This has been beat to death by the insiders already.

Paramount and Dreamworks SKG got 50million. But they have already announced they will release on bluray.

Dreamworks ANIMATION got 100million and have NOT announced bluray support. They would rather take the 100million and stay exclusive until 2009 since they have a very limited catalogue anyways. Apparently Toshiba didnt write themselves an out clause if HDDVD died hahaha

Dreamworks Animation very openly admited they were paid off. This is because they're trying to imply that Toshiba should comply to that contract. They're blackmailing Toshiba in a way.

I really hope this doesn't mean we will be missing out on Sweeney Todd for Blu.

One more comment:

In essence, it sounds like Toshiba is holding Dreamworks hostage.

On the other hand, Dreamworks might be holding Toshiba hostage... meaning that Dreamworks is sticking to its end of the deal in order to legally force additional payments out of Toshiba.

Maybe I've watched one too many extortion movies.

Dreamworks Animation is holding Toshiba hostage. 100million is a lot of money for a company that owns Shrek and not much else.
