Default BD Rental Discs.. Is Hardcoat working ?

Though I would ask this question to confirm that the hardcoat on BD discs is doing its job. When BluRay goes mainstream the rental market (Nexflix, Blockbuster... etc.) is going to really put discs to the test. I personally think that HD-DVD discs just aren't going to be durable enough to survive the rough handling they will get.

Any reports on the BD rental discs to share ??

Well one of my BD purchases came with a loose disc inside rattling, and I was very worried because usually when that happens with a CD or DVD it means I get a scratched disc, but when I opened the case, the loose disc's finish was perfect. I don't know if it was because of any coatings or luck, but that was a relief!

I of course immediately welded the disc to the hub so it would never happen again

Here's another thread where we talked about scratches.

Thumbs up No problems here

I've also had 2 BD purchases that had a loose disc rattling in the case, but there was no damage.

I am also a Netflix customer and usually get 2 BD's per week sent through the mail in their thin paper envelope. I am surprised at how perfect they are. Once in a while they have a few smudges, but I just wipe them off. Granted all their BD inventory is new and I know the usage rate is not what DVD's are, but so far so good.

No word on Blu-ray hardcoats, but an acquaintance of mine who has an HD DVD player has been getting a lot of scratched and unplayable discs via Netflix. Like, 6 out of the last 10 titles. He complained to Netflix, but has yet to hear back. Meanwhile, he's gone through 3(!) discs of "Superman Returns" and has only found 1 that played well. I told him he might as well buy it to ensure he gets a pristine copy.

In my case, I've got 7 BDs from Netflix so far and they've all played flawlessly on my PS3.
