Default Does anything smart actually happen at higher education institutions?

[rant]

So I'm sitting here in one of our computer labs.. and all semester long the A/C has been out, just in this one room, rest of the building is fine. Not a big deal, right? Well, when you put over 100 computers in a room running 24/7, things get warm. I'm sitting here sweating in shorts and a t-shirt. On top of that they don't take care of their computers here what so ever. Looking at the fan intake on the PC it is jam packed with dust, lint and so forth. The power supply on the back is red hot. They aren't running slow or anything but its a joke, clean the crap out. Now on to the mice. Since we live in the 21st century we use the most up to date roller ball mice Dell has been so kind to provide us. So everytime I come into this particular lab I have to open the mouse up and clean the crap off the rollers so it actually moves with my hand. What amazes me though is there are 3 lab student workers in here on facebook. Amazing. They ***** at me when I have a drink in here so everytime I have to clean a mouse out I'm going to ***** at them for being lazy. Is it really so hard to go around once a month and take some canned air a blow the PC out so it doesn't spontaneously combust? And pop the mice open and clean them up a bit?

Man I'm in a bad mood. All I've done today is homework and I'm about to go postal.

Probably the worst part that you all might care about is theres a 50" Pioneer plamsa mounted on the wall that I've seen turned on ONCE in my career here. It's gotta be crying in this heat, not to mention the computers.

The two schools I've attended (one for my BA, the other I'm at for my MA) have two totally different priorities when it comes to the computer labs..

The school I did my BA work at had a great computer lab, but seriously lacked in air conditioning... You would think they would want to keep them cool, but no, they kept the rooms warm...VERY WARM.... It would be the middle of winter and just like you, people would be in shorts and t-shirts... Only plus is that all the computers were updated my junior year, so we went from P4's to Duals... Nice little dells that actually did what we wanted them to do, even if they were in an oven.... Just too bad they got rid of the projectors in favor of smaller plasmas.

Now, where I'm doing my MA work, the computer labs are bigger, air conditioned, the computers are clean, and I can honestly say that most of the machines could possibly run an intensive game like Crysis. These computers are beasts... The room never gets above 70... If you don't like it cold, you will hate it in there.. Each room has 4 projectors (1 facing each wall), 2 plasmas, and the "lodge (small room)" has quite possibly the nicest feature of all, computers with BD burners. Yes, that's right, BD burners... Why? Because they were donated by a local firm whose President once attended the school as a Comp. Sci. major...

I guess it helps though that my BA school was fairly large (approx. 21,000), while my MA school is kinda small (approx. 4,000)....

BTW, the whole BD burner thing is nice until you learn that in order to actually use those machines, you have to have a class in that room. Unfortunately, I don't, so I get no use from them, but a cool feature none the less, although since they seem to buy new computers every 2 years, it will come standard next time around.

It's been a while since college, but while we did have infrared mice, the provided Dell mousepads at each workstation was a funky reflective diamond pattern that just wreaked havoc on mouse control.

at my HS we all had new G4 machines with LCD monitors (some even 20")..the only crappy part was those one click apple mouses that were complete shit when doing work in Photoshop (not to mention the bottoms got nasty crap on them and had to be cleaned quite often.

With that being said the college I go actually has some decent machines, and they are in a cooled area (the library) so cant complain there...other than people only using them to go on myspace or facebook.

What's a computer lab? All I remember from my college days were the keg parties in the dorms!

My College decided to get a new president and dump ALL SORTS of money into making the school nicer (and I'm not sure who organized it, but the surrounding area and businesses have all been re-vamped) Let's see.... my tuition increased exponentially each year/quarter I was there, and once I graduated, the new president spends that money....... plus I give $5k or so to the alumni association........

Hey... dirty/hot computer labs are no big deal..... wait until you're in the real-job market.... MORE dissapointment is on the way young grasshopper!

this sounds like Clemson.....Our tuition increases every year because of the president's pursuit to be in the "top 20".

Oh I'm sure of that, its just sad we put all this money into something and have to sweat our balls off while doing homework. Tuition goes up every semester for me as well.

The one smart thing that has happened at our school is a while back (2 or 3 years) they completely disbanded the football program, saving the school millions (literally). Our school, etsu.edu, is a decent sized school but our football team was always in a losing battle. Many people locally were disappointed it was stopped but I think it was a great business decision. Attendance was low, poor records, no 'star' players that went to NFL or anything.
