Question New Member - just a few quick questions!

Hello all! I'm a new member from the UK and this if my first post - Firstly, I am an owner of an Xbox 360 Elite with an HD DVD drive. If you've been keeping up with the news lately, you'll know exactly why I'm here.

So - I'm in the market for a Blu-Ray player. I really would like to avoid the PS3 for many reasons including fan noise, and ease of use.

I was originally looking at the BD P1400 by Samsung (I should say at this point that I am the owner of a 40 inch Samsung M87 LCD). However, I've recently found out about the new Panasonic BD30 which is being released on April 7 here in the UK. Now, I notice that it has a feature called 'Viera Link' which seems very similar to Samsung's 'Anynet+' (I'm guessing this is HDMI-CEC). Being the owner of a Samsung TV can I make use of this Viera Link technology?

Also, I own a Denon AVR-1507 AV receiver. This supports 8ch audio in (with manual inputs) or 5.1 (with digital inputs - I think ). As far as I know, it can do DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD but only through individual channel inputs.

As a new buyer of Blu-Ray and a new member of the Blu-Ray camp, any advice, tips and tricks would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks for reading this pretty lengthy post and I await your responses!

Thanks again!

My advice....

1) use the search tool
2) check out the Players section (lists all upcoming players)
3) wait. wait until the new profile 2.0 players are out. If you do not want a PS3, then you should wait.
Honestly, the PS3 is without a doubt the best Blu-ray player on the market. For its price, it does more than more Blu-ray players, has the most upgrades, is the most future-proof, and is the most popular. But if you are really against it (and I would highly suggest you remove any idea that it is bad cause it is a console), then you will just have to wait for the final profile players to come out. If you need one right now, check out the Players sections.

As far as fan noise.. it is hyped up FUD. The PS3 is really very quiet, especially the cooler running 40GB models.
As far as ease-of-use.... well if you can handle an XBOX, a PS3 should be easy as pie. I even got my 69 year old boss running one. Seriously, it is very very very easy to use. And if you manage to upgrade it via internet, you will get the best new Blu-ray features including auto-start for movies, so you don't even have to select the movie to start it, just put it in the player.
If you are against it cause it is Sony... sucks to be you. If you are against it cause you don't want a second game console... well just don't use it as one. My boss uses his exclusively to play movies, no games at all. you can even lock it so kids can't play without your password if you want to keep your kids off it.

The PS3 is an awesome BD player -- but each to their own...

I should warn you.. everyone will tell you to buy a PS3.
Cause not only is it the best available and for a great price... but also cause it will support profile 2.0.

I'm not against Sony - I'm buying a Blu-Ray player for starters! I really, really want a standalone player - it's just my thing - sorry! Plus I need the coaxial/individual audio inputs.

Try this one... not sure it has what you want but...
https://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?id=5

Also check out the players coming out soon.
Honestly right now is not the best time to buy a stand alone player. All the companies are concentrating on getting out their new ones so the prices have not come down yet. But by this summer you should start to see the new players hit the market.

Well, I will - I think. It's the only way I can get DTHD or DTSHD. But I guess I'll need a player that processes the audio itself i.e. not bitstream.

If your worried about fan noise don't worry about the PS3 then....My PS3's are dead silent , not like the good old jet engine xbox360 , that poor thing sounds like a vacuum cleaner sucking up rocks, when its working at all. Get any player(except, Sammy 1200) they all play the Disc's. or wait for the 2.0 players...

I'm not as familiar with all of the models, but the fan noise from a 40GB model is pretty much non-existent. I can barely hear it even when I stick my ear to the back of the machine.

FWIW...

I haven't really got room for a PS3 in my set up so I need something relatively slimline like the Panasonic. Plus I just don't need another games console. I already have a Wii and a 360.

vieralink is only for panasonic compatible equipment....

to answer your question of which player to buy,

the Panasonic DMP-BD50 is the player you want because it can internally decoding of HD audio codecs

the DMP-BD30 cannot internally decode, but if you plan to upgrade your receiver this a great option

The samsung BD-P1400 no internal decoding and has a playback issues with several discs, there are threads on this forum about which ones.
