I have owned many different brands of receivers, and my least fav is sony. Don't get me wrong, I love sonys other products. I just don't care for their receivers. ps3 does decode true hd

Any receiver with Sony's name on it is almost by definition a complete turd. Sorry Sony fans (I do actually own one of their TVs -- so this is not hate, but reality).

Onkyo on the other hand (along with Denon and Yamaha) makes among the finest recievers out there. The current X05 line-up is amazing -- fantastic feature set, sound and value for the money.

I have an 805 and think it is the tits. I also own a Denon 2807 -- and I think it is great as well. And I have a 9 year old Yammy 595a that is still in service and still sounds great.

General consensus (as you see above) is that Sony makes low quality audio products (including speakers and receivers).
I used to own a Sony receiver, and I actually liked it quite a bit. It was a cheap one but it did what I wanted and did it well.
However, I since upgraded my Sony to an Onkyo 805 and the Sony didn't even come close to holding a candle to it. Hugh difference.
But that's comparing a cheap, old, low quality receiver to my beautiful 805.

See if you can find a display model of each and make your decision based on that. I'd vote 805, but that's my opinion.

well, I hear nothing but great things about the Onkyo 805 and im not into criticizing SONY equipment (I have SONY speakers ), to each his own...but another possible consideration would be:

Yamaha RX-V863 ($899)

(heres a Review)

You have a good receiver in the STR-DG810. Unless you are going to 7.1. why do you feel the need to upgrade? You have HDMI switching, and some good audio formats. I think I would put the money in speakers for a much more noticeable difference!

The PS3 will decode DTS HD MA in a future update, so yes, its worth it.

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The PS3 CANNOT bitstream high def audio. What that means is if you buy the 805, the PS3 can't send the DTS HD-MA signal to the receiver for processing.
As it stands right now, there is NO way to get the full effect of DTS HD-MA with the PS3. It can't decode it, or send it to the receiver for decoding.
I bought my 805 for $750 on ebay. You can maybe get it a bit cheaper elsewhere if you live in the US.
The 805 can decode both HD codecs, but because of the PS3 issue I mentioned above, it won't do you much good.

Actually, yes the PS3 can decode Dolby TrueHD, and it has been conrifmed that Dts-HD MA is on the way.
