Default Burning HD Video to BluRay

I have a Sony HDR-HC3 HiDef Camcorder and use a Playstation 3 to view my HD films on TV. Using media sharing I can copy relatively small videos to the Playstation, after editing with Sony Vegas Studio Platinum 8.0.However I am now at the stage where I have larger video files, and I would like to burn them to BluRay disks.

I have seen a LG external Blu Ray burner device, but it needs a very demanding PC spec - ie RAM 1 GB or more, and a SATA connection (?). My Acer Aspire 1801 laptop does not meet the spec, so will not be able to use the burner.

Is the best answer to purchase a Sony Vaio laptop, with built-in burner and use that exclusively for Video Editing and Blu Ray burning ?

Do any members have any experience of using the Sony Vaio or any other advice they can offer me ?

Many Thanks,
Peter Stevenson

All sorts of HD editing (Blu-ray, HD content for the web or any else) will need quite a demanding setup.
I would highly suggest to get a desktop rather than a laptop.
There are some mid price ones out there that will be good to go for at least the next 3 years (meaning you wont need to upgrade anything).
Let me know if you have any specific questions, we have 3 desktops dedicated to editing at the office.

Worked on my PS3 20GB. Edited some home video with Sony Vegas and burned on TDK BD-R. A friend however had problems playing RiData BD-R (edited the same way) on his 40GB! Wonder if this might have something to do with the whole backwards compatability?

Yes totally agree... I do a lot of editing too, and the best way is on a desktop computer. Don't invest in a laptop if this is what you want to do mainly. Laptops, because of their size, are still limited. You can build or buy a really good editing desktop computer in this days. I have a Sony VAIO desktop machine, I've had it for the last 3 years and I just updated 6 months ago because I want to keep the nice and stylish black Sony case... this machines are no longer built. So now I have a Quad-Core system on my old Sony case hooked to 2 HS95 Sony monitors... this is the one I use for editing.
Best,
DJ Headd

Peter, in order to get serious about burning HDM you have to invest in the serious equipment, period. 1 GB ram and SATA is pretty common these days.

Not a simple solution that you want, but it is the most realistic. I have HD tape I'd love to put on blu-ray but everything is so expensive. No rush for now, if you ask me.

If your able to edit your HDV footage with your laptop, then burning a BD-R/RE should not be an issue. However, you probably cannot view the footage smoothly because playback requires some horsepower.

You can either author a BD disc (menus, playable on other stand alones) or just place the edited file on a data BD disc and the ps3 will list the files (no menu, etc...) so you can play or copy to the ps3.

There a few authoring programs such as DVDit Pro HD, Movie Factory, Cyberproducer, etc...with different prices levels and features.
