Default Question about Blu-ray movie viewing

Hello everyone. Had a quick question. When it comes to watching blu-ray movies I have noticed some have that "widescreen look" with the black borders on the top and bottom and others fill out the whole screen on my tv. Is there a setting I can change on my PS3 and/or TV so I always have that widescreen look with the borders, or is that just the way the certain movie was formatted for viewing. I thought it was just happening to older movies (the getaway, bullit, commando etc.) but, the Condmened fills the whole screen as well. Also, when watching Family Guy and Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, the picture bascially turns into a square. I have scene the settings on my tv and PS3 for Full, normal, zoom, and wide zoom, but not sure which ones they need to be on. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks again as always,
Tony

These aspect ratios are just what the movies were filmed in, and is the director's desired output.
The reason why Family Guy and the other show look to be a square is because that's the format that they were created in, as they weren't made for widescreen televisions. It is the 4:3 aspect.

You should keep your television and PS3 on "normal" I believe, in order to retain the correct aspect of the film and television shows. Although one of the others may stretch your Family Guy video to fill the screen, the characters will look squished.

I'm sure someone else will be able to provide a complete detailed list of all the different aspect ratios and why some have black borders on the top and bottom, and others not, I'm just not determined enough to collect all of that information. I don't have it on hand or in my head.

This explains it all. Black bars haven't gone away with Blu-Ray.
