Default Managed Copy to be absent from final AACS specification

Consumer Electronics Daily reports that Managed Copy will NOT be included in the AACS specification due to be released this summer. MC was originally intended to be a mandatory feature of Blu-ray discs, allowing users the limited, authorized ability to network content, make backups for mobile devices, etc.
A good idea which the powers that be have decided against. Too bad!

None of the studios want you ripping their discs...EVER

The vast majority will disable it, and include PSP/iPod copies

Don't forget this guy is a paid pundit, it's very likely he's on the payroll of people like Microsoft,HP or Kaleidescope (and from the below, probably MS)
They desperitely want to keep MC alive, so they had him issue this counterspin.

Look at previous posts:

SEPT. 14 | Hopes (or fears) that Warner Home Video would drop its support for Blu-ray in return for a pile of cash from the HD DVD camp, thus returning the high-def format war to its original three-to-three studio balance, were dashed this week—at least for now.

AUG. 24 | Much has been made that the decision by Paramount and DreamWorks to support HD DVD exclusively was greased by cash payments and “promotional considerations.” While I have no trouble believing that promotional considerations were involved, as an explanation for such a significant step at this stage, it doesn’t add up.
Yup, probably MS. Check out this "column" that reads like a press release

By Paul Sweeting LAS VEGAS-Software giant Microsoft has restructured its Windows Digital Media division to give greater focus to its efforts to embed Microsoft technology in emerging home entertainment platforms. Now split into two separate units, one piece will continue to support the Windows operating system business, while the second will focus on the company's digital rights management strategy and on incorporating Microsoft software into consumer electronics devices such as HD DVD players and new portable media players.

No disagreement that Paul Sweeting is one of the least credible people on the subject. On the other hand I always believed MMC was a bad idea (that would obviously be fought by studios) and just a marketing ploy. But I Hope that it is a mistake and MC will be a part of AACS and I don't see (assuming it actually works) any reason why anyone would be against it.

PC Blu-ray playback software has already been responsible for nearly all security breaches thus far. Software that must decrypt then re-encrypt is just inviting more.
