If it works for one studio they all eventually copy the idea. I imagine on movies that skew younger(ie males aged 12-24) the studios think this is a decent incentive for consumers to go out and buy an actual copy instead of pirating it.

I hope WB starts doing it for all their new day and date titles. I would love to see the rest of the studios pick up on this in time for the summer releases that are coming later this year. It would be great if they started doing it for catalog titles as well. But time will tell.

I don't know if anyone saw it but the Best Buy ad a couple of weeks ago had a bunch of Sony DVDs that were available exclusively there with digital copies. I don't really care either way as I really have no need to carry a version for a portable player, but I was quite surprised to see Sony supporting what is basically a rival device to their own PSP with these digital copies that only work with iPods and devices using Microsoft's PlaysForSure system. Even more surprising since Sony has already stated a video download service is coming to the PS3 by year's end.

It will be a more and more common feature. They'd rather toss a quarter to Apple to handle validations than have you ripping the disc.
Eventually these will be moved onto the actual blu-ray once there's more BD-ROMs and when PS3 gets an update to copy them |

Direct BD copying would mean bigger HDD's. And with Sony's Video/TiVo service coming somtime this or next year everyone will need much more storage capacity. Good thing im upgrading soon.

What I don't understand about the "digital copy" thing is that it makes the piracy factor even more easy. Rent the BD, put the digital copy on your HD, return the BD, and share with your friends. At least with the BD content there is heavy security protecting the film from being pirated.
Maybe I'm missing something in this scenario? |
