Does anyone really know why some blu-ray players come with dd+ when that was a hd dvd format, and to date Ive never saw the 1st blu-ray with that audio option?

In fact, using DD+ on BD, the main 5.1 channels are encoded at 640kbps (compatible with stnadard DD) and the rest of the audio bitstream (up to 1.5Mbps) is used only for the side surrounds. It's a haphazard implementation with little use given that Blu-ray has the space for lossless audio. |

1) if it is very low bitrate then it is better then DD (it has extra filters that help with compressing low bitrate) 2) if you go with more channels. The first is not supported by BD and useless. 3) I think it accepts higher sampeling frequency 1) is not supported by BD because it needs a true DD core, 2 is supported by BD, 3 I am not sure. The thing is that neither 1 nor 3 are very useful at all and very few come in 7.1 so there is no use going DD+ like with HD DVD (where you would be limited to around 500kbps DD |

Thankyou, so I guess they are a useless audio codec on a blu-ray player, which is fine since they are mastering more blus with one of the hd audio tracks! Was just curious as to why some players are capable!

In spite of what Brackett says, these are not DD+ at all. Bluray does not require DD plus, because Bluray was designed from the ground up to handle the increased packet size of 640kbps DD. HD DVD was not, and was only able to handle 448kbps DD. So in order to get the higher bit rate, DD plus is core DD plus the additional metadata that holds the additional packet size for bitrate above the core rate. Bluray only supports DD to 640kbps, and all Dolby Digital processors can handle that bitrate without having to convert to PCM. Mission impossible soundtrack is encoded at 640kbps |
