View Poll Results: Would you like there to be an option on players to view 2.35:1 movies fullscreen?
Yes - I'd like an option on players to view 2.35:1 movies using the full 1.78:1 screen 15 17.44%
No - I don't want such an option on players 66 76.74%
I'd like 2.35:1 movies to be stored anamorphically for higher quality with the above option 14 16.28%
I'd like it if Blu-ray players had motion interpolation too 3 3.49%
3D movies/capable players would be good also 8 9.30%

Would you like there to be an option on Blu-ray players to zoom 2.35:1 movies to fill the 1.78:1 screen (by cutting the picture on left & right)?

Sorry for the discrepancy between the title of the thread and the poll (it's meant to say 2.35:1 in the title - though there could be an option to view both 2.39:1 and 2.35:1 in full 1.78:1)

No, but the only seeming place that Blu-ray went wrong was its lack of an anamorphic mode for alternate aspect ratios.

Would never used it, because it would distort the orignal aspect ration.

I'm talking about cropping on the sides then scaling to fit the 1.78:1 screen (or using anamorphic encoding which should be even better) - neither should distort things so that people would look really tall/thin or short/fat (assuming players understood the anamorphic option in the later case)

Also, it's just an extra option - it's not like people have to use it if they don't want to

Terrible idea. No need for it. OAR only.

I'm all for choice - whilst I like to see the director's/cinematographer's original intent, I wouldn't be so churlish as to deny anyone the option of doing a little zooming and cropping to make the image fit the screen if you find the black bars so distracting that they spoil your enjoyment of the movie. It may interest you to know that here in the UK, Sky Movies and Film Four among others predominatntly broadcast movies in the Original Aspect Ratio. There seems to be little concession to any desire to fill the screen over here.

As far as anamorphic encoding for 2.35 & similar movies go, this sounds risky to me now that the players and format are launched - it might have been wonderful if they'd put it in to the spec from day one as we may have seen some delicious cinemascope-shaped LCD and plasma displays... I would worry, though that the de-interpolation required to take a 1080p 2.35:1 signal and make it a 1080p 16:9 letterbox might not be possible with a simple firmware update to legacy Blu-ray players -- that might be on the wish-list for the next format. lol

Is the reason there is no anamorphic due to 1:1 maping being better to display than scaling the image

Now wait a moment.....I would never, ever, in a million years want to watch a movie outside of its OAR, but I am an owner of a very nice plasma TV and I do like to have the full screen filled from time to time to reduce screen burn in. I know that I can use a callibration disk, but having Lawrence of Arabia (when it come out) going as I do chores around the house is better than a four hour screen wash.

One of the best things about this format is that the movies tend to be in the OAR. As long as that would not change, I would like the option.
