Default Lots of grain in my HD picture?

I'm using a 22" Gateway Monitor that supports HDMI and HDCP with a Playstation 3 to watch my Blu Ray movies. I have these attached via HDMI and I have my PS3 set to output at 720p for movies. The monitors max supported resolution is 1680x1050. In all of the movies I have watched there seems to be a significant amount of fuzziness. The picture still looks nice but in most cases it can be sort of fuzzy. Thing's just don't look terribly sharp. What can I do about this? HDTV on this looks FANTASTIC but while watching a Blu Ray it doesn't look nearly as good........Any ideas for settings I could mess with on the monitor?

So far, Rush Hour 3, Dan in Real Life and 300. 300 seemed to look pretty good overall but seemed to be lacking a certain level of detail.

300 is one of the grainiest films on Blu... it is intentional though. most of the time it is intentional to retain the film-like look. so you will see it, but especially with 300 it is pretty extreme

What is the BEST looking Blu Ray film basically that most people agree on? I will go and rent it and see how it looks in comparison to the others. It's too bad that all Blu Rays don't look the same........

Well all masters the transfer comes from aren't the same, so movies are going to vary in look. Some of the best looking off the top of my head would be, "I, Robot" "Casino Royale" "Crank". These are some of my personal favorite visual wise.

The grain in 300 is ADDED as a post-production effect.

Most movies have a bit of grain. Depending on the cameras and the filming process used, grain can be present throughought the entire film, or just in darker or hazy scenes. Its a natural quality of film/photography. You want to be able to see the grain in the movies that have it, then you can be sure you are maximizing sharpness and seeing all the details. Noise cancelling and other processes that try to remove grain also soften the picture, sacrificing detail. Low res/compressed sources, like DVD, Also typically do not show film grain well.

Many modern movies though, are shot with really high quality equipment and are slicked up a lot in post production so they have a very crisp appearance and exhibit little grain. Good examples of this would be The 5th Element, Casino Royale, and I, Robot. Casino Royale does exihibit grain in hazy or darker scenes though, which shows they were modest in post production.

Older movies tend to have more instances of grain because older camera equipment was/is not as good.

You are scaling 720p to fit a much larger space. You lose sharpness and your monitor's built in scaler may add some noise. Try running Blu-rays in 1080i, That looked better to me on the 22 that I ran for awhile.

If the picture itself is actually "fuzzy," that doesn't sound like film grain. Many films with grain still possess an incredible amount of fine detail...take Black Hawk Down, e.g.

Do what others here have said--play Ratatouille or Cars, which have zero grain to speak of, being animation, and if you see any fuzziness there, you know it's not the Blu-rays.

So on the PS3 uncheck everything accept 1080i and see how it looks?

Turn off Sharpness. Id test with either Apocalypto or Cloverfield. The two cleanest looking blu's ive seen.

Turn of any noise reduction as well. They usually don't work well with film sources.

Not using the native resolution of you're monitor doesn't help, i know you can't because the PS3 can't do other thing than 720p, 1080i and 1080p. But if i were you i'll try 1080p on it, it's closer to 1050 than 720p. Any digital display should be use as close as native as possible, otherwise it's just a blurry mess

Yeah, give it a shot. It is technically a higher resolution, so It should look better. Assuming your monitor's scaler is okay with interlaced sources.

I wish I could help you in someway but I have had the same problem with my 61" Samsung Hdtv ever since I had it. Most of my blu-rays look very "fuzzy" too. The only blu-rays that don't look "fuzzy" with my hdmi cable connected are animation(TMNT, Cars, Beowulf). I know its not the blu-rays, and its not my ps3 either because I actually tried it out with a samsung blu-ray player and I got the same results. Its not my hdmi cable because I also tried it out with a new cable and got the same results. Besides my dish network channels connected via hdmi cable look really good and better than most of my blu-ray movies.

A Tech guy from Samsung came to check out my tv to see if there was anything wrong and he didn't find anything wrong with my tv. However he did notice the fuzziness of my blu-rays when connected via hdmi but couldn't explain why. The fuzziness makes my blu-rays look worse than dvds, seriously

Now the ironic thing is that my blu-rays look much better with my component cables connected instead of the hdmi and the Samsung guy agreed.

Could there be some type of electrical interference or something causing my blu's to look bad?

Granted, my TV might be too big for my room and too close from viewing distance but even from watching from a far away distance you can still see the fuzziness. I have been watching blu's with componet for the mean time but that resolution is only 1080i(and yes my tv supports 1080p)

I have yet to see the true power of blu and 1080p due to the "fuzziness" but heres hoping I will one day.

and if any has any suggestions for me please pm. thanks

Try a different HDMI cable, or try to reseat the cable.

On the DVE calibration Blu-ray there's a remark to the effect that on some displays the HDMI input is actually lower quality than the analogue component video inputs. Could your TV be like this?

I have included a video to the best of my ability of kind of what I am seeing, I figure you guys can then figure it out from there. If you look at the video where the people aren't standing you will see like a static fuzziness. That's what I speak of and it seems to sort of distort the picture. Video It's like white noise all throughout the picture.
