Default Re mortgaging the house to buy blu rays

l was wondering why in Australia we have to pay up to AU$50 for a new blu ray movie release and around AU$100 for a tv series such as Heroes. The only reason l can come up with is absolute greed by the distributors who apparently charge retailers up to AU$38. And l thought piracy was illegal??

Because people will pay that.

Piracy, though, is an interesting part of the Blu-Ray (and, formerly, HDDVD) issue. The way I see it, Blu-Ray is the studios' last real chance to f___ the consumer, for the simple reason that consumers have no alternative (legal or illegal)

Compare to, say, mp3 downloads, were studios (even, in the end, Sony) finally had to drop their embedded DRM, etc. for the simple fact that not that many people were interested in paying money for an inferior product, when they could pirate something better for free.

The prices will go down, it's just a matter of time. Plus Australia no doubt gets screwed due to the shipping charges to a giant island that need to be either flew in or carried in by ship.
