I found this to be an interesting article in light of the push by certain companies to have downloaded movies be the wave of the future:
Surprise, Surprise: U.S. Broadband Is Slow. Really Slow Some snippets of the article: Quote:

Isn't that the American way? Less product for more money?

Business is business. Americans have no problem paying for it, te demand for faster internet is not backed up with consumer money of government regulation, so the status quo continues.
I pay $14 for 1MB upload. Not bad, but it is a promotional deal. |

My only two issues with the article are:
1. Land mass, easier to have a high speed infrastructure when your country is the size of Montana vs all 50 states. 2. 63Mb/s would be awesome, you won't see that speed from Japan to the US. On a speedtest my connection drops in speed by over half going from here to Tokyo. With that said, I hope the report helps bring faster speeds in this country. |

eh, I think you're thinking Canada....44 a month for ~6 down ~600 up +
25 for unlimited bandwidth (60g cap) + tax = huge ass rip off...and since there's only 2 providers in the area its about the same rip off either way... I wish we could get ripped off like in the US... Last edited by Bizi Jones; 08-15-2008 at 04:35 AM. |

Probably unrelated, but lately my Comcast (Twin Cities MN area) has been really bad. Long load times & pauses, even after cleaning up with ant-ad-ware programs

I think compared to most of the rest of the world it really sucks in the US.
Another big downer living in Hawaii. All we can choose from is either Verizon (Hawaiian Telcom) DSL or Time Warner (Oceanic's Road Runner) Cable. There is a few wireless companies, but that is just enough bandwidth to get to your email account and maybe check some new ebay listings. I've tried both and to be honest they are not worth the money you have to pay for it. DSL had to much outages that I canceled after a month of service. Right now basic cable (4mb/512kbp) is $44.95 and if you want Turbo (8/1) its an extra $10.00 Outages still happen because the whole network is too old and the wires they're using split between too many households. My dad pays 39.99 Euros in Germany (includes phone, a fax line, card for mobile and DSL) for a 16mb/2mb line! And that is just standard!!! I've tried a few lines on the mainland, mainly on the West Coast and they are just a bit faster than what we get here. The main concern is that our business owns big servers mainly in Europe and the upload rate from here to there just get throttles down more and more. We just bought ADSL 10/10 line for $1200.00 a month... so far so good, but I still only get about 1.5mbs upload per ftp client open. Due to speedtest.net its 12500kbps / 9500kbps I wish to get the Japan speeds, especially for my home connection, or at least a solid fiber line within the next 2 years (dream on!) |

I could stand a couple more mbps upload though - like about 8 more. Ever try to backup, offsite, a 13GB system image? @ 2-3mbps, is isn't nearly as bad as it was with 768kbps, but it's still a drag. |

hehe i have fiber optic internet. 100mbps connection speed both ways. its sad sometimes because its too fast for my ethernet port to handle. i can download movies in minutes and songs in seconds. its one of the few benefits of living in a foreign country.
