Default UK Disc sales to date comparison.

This is how sales stand pre PS3, will be interesting to compare at a later date.

Feb is still TBC

Preivious sales were

Blu Ray:
October 148 discs sold
November 492 discs sold
December 1194 discs sold
January 1,174 discs sold

HD DVD:
November 673 discs sold
December 7527 discs sold
January 5525 Discs sold

Totals: Blu Ray 3008 discs
HD DVD 13725 discs

This is with HD-DVD players availble in quantity and with healthy player imports from the USA + the 360 addon. I dont think one has to be a genious to see that the PS3 effect could either level the playing field or dominate the market even if only a low number of PS3 users buy a movie or two, the numbers for Blu ray will shoot up.

As a guess say only 250 000 consoles enter the UK at launch and only 25% buy a movie, well you do the math.

Just shows how piddly the current market is here in old blighty at the mo

Releasing Harry Potter for HD-DVD in the UK helped their cause.

However, I do want to see those figures once the PS3 is released.

From March 23-March 31st, we should see how Blu-ray would fight back over there.

Wait -- these are hd-dvd sales figures AFTER the release of Harry Potter? Less than 14,000 total? That's actually pathetic... blu-ray should dominate the uk market in a matter of weeks.

How many were sold vs give away? In the US buy a HD-DVD player and get a handful of movies if the same applies in the UK it may not be that impressive. A 100,000 (plus or minus a few as 500,000 is for all of Europe) Casino Royale Blu-ray movies should tip the scales a little.

I imagine a lot of Harry Potter discs came to the USA (I got one even ).

I would love to know what percentage of these purchases were exported...

Nice post! Where did this data come from?
How many HD-DVD players are we looking at in the UK.....less than 2000?
If the pre-order buzz is anything to go by, overnight the UK will have 250,000 Blu Ray players in place by the 23rd March.Isint that like 100 : 1 ratio in favour of Blu Ray!

I already own 2 BD with a further 10 on pre-order in March.
Looks like HD-DVD,s last stand wil be in NA

Thats true, but amazon, play, and other online stores have growing stocks, thou some of the BD discs like kOH are selling for like £23.99 which is way too high to push sales real high. best selling title at play was BHD and that was sold at £13.99 and £11.99 at amazon

I agree, all of my 11 discs have been imported from the USA. However, I suspect that will change soon, indeed from your other thread it looks as though there be very strong promotional activity of BD in the UK this year, and if the rumours are true about 'Blockbuster' stocking BD's discs that may have quite an impact.

However, as long as studios continue to hold up UK cinema release dates of movies and subsequent BD's there will always be a strong motive to import (the weak dollar also has an impact).

Since last week with the releases of Open Season, Monster House, ... our local MediaMarkt (Gentbrugge) has the Bd's on display... as I say, put in a display... before, they were only viewable when asked to someone from the store.

9 titles so far, all bought locally. (Belgium)

This, to me, is another example of why the format war canot be called as "over" yet.

Good info. The numbers above frankly can be interpretted as neither format has really launched in the UK, and all sales are coming entirely from people that manage to get a hold of something.

I predict that on PS/3 launch day in the UK, assuming the HMV have the BD discs stocked ready to go, they'll easily sell 20K discs. That is, day one of the PS/3 will put BD permanently ahead in HD disc sales.
