The Day the Earth Stood Still

This is a fine 1950 sci-fi film with an outstanding story, great acting, and an almost complete absence of fancy special effects.

Technofantasy walks a thin, gray line . . . but it's still fantasy. Just as Steampunk Sci-Fi can walk the thin gray line between science fiction and historical fiction, Technofantasy can never quite qualify as Sci-Fi.
If science fiction is your favorite genre, you should understand what it entails. It's like saying a certain band is your favorite band but only knowing the name of the lead singer.

I would like to challenge anybody here to jump down my throat for getting too into the details and being too nerdy or critical.
I'd also like to challenge them to consider the fact that they're on a sci-fi thread, too. So, maybe, they're just being argumentative.
To quote Yoda, "There is no Nerdy. Only right and wrong."

Currently Sunshine closely followed by Independence Day, Aliens or maybe Serenity.

I really like several of the ones you listed though.

I got that covered, the General came back in time from fighting Marky Mark Wahlberg and created a giant ape, and when that didn't work {because it got defeated by Adrien Brody's nose} he created a planet of the apes.
