But the existing transfer will not do. It really needs to be completely remastered. The criterion DVD has non-anamorphic picture and monaural sound. The anchor bay editions have anamorphic picture, but the grain is more evident, which means they probably just re-encoded the criterion transfer as anamorphic. It had stereo sound, but each channel was the same mono track.

This film deserves a hi-def transfer with lossless 5.1. With the stupid stupid stupid remake coming, hopefully we won't have to wait too long.
