Panny TH50PX80U??

Was wondering if Im really missing much as this is a 720p set? It has the same 1080 panel as the PZ series but down rezs the 1080 signal. It does have a very good picture and no worse than my last 1080p DLP set. Just curious if there is really a big difference between the 720p and 1080p sets or would I really notice a major difference?

personally anything over 40 i would go 1080p. it's obviously up to you, but you can really benefit from 1080 over 720 at larger sizes displays especially.

it really depends on how close/far you are sitting from the set as well. but i would agree that anything 50" and above should be 1080p

The deal was I exchanged my Samsung dlp even up for the Panny. I didnt have the extra $$$ to add but they wanted about $500 more for the PZ.

well if you are happy with the PQ then that's all that matters! it is still an awesome tv!

I am, and Brett you have the 1080p version of the same set, which I know you already know and if you remember my post on vivid mode, I ended up using custom mode and have grown to like it!!!

Yea I see I read the post wrong, eyes must be going! And that is a good deal, a few months back it was $1500.

That's not very good advice. You can have a 60" tv that's 1080p and one that's 720p and depending on your viewing distance there can be either NO benefit with 1080p source material or a large benefit.

The same goes for a 22" 1920x1200 monitor. At computer viewing distances watching a 1080p Apple trailer versus a 720p Apple trailer will show you a great deal more detail.

Screen size alone is completely irrelevant.

You need to know

a) source resolution
b) panel resolution
c) screen size
d) viewing distance

It doesn't have the same "1080 panel" as the PZ series, because they're different amongst themselves as well.

For overall PQ there won't be a big difference between this and an 80U model, but there will be between this and the 800U model.

In terms of resolution, it all depends on what you're watching and where you're sitting.

You may be right but I was told they use the same panel. When I hit the info button on the remote it says 1080p but Im sure thats just the signal its getting but not putting out.

That is the input signal, all of the Viera line for 2007 and 2008 will handshake with 1080p signals and scale to the native resolution of the panel.

This works better than plasma/dlp/lcd's that can only handshake up to 1080i, because you eliminate any interlacing/de-interlacing which most often introduces artifacts.

So is it downrezing to 720p or 768p? No 1080i?
