Default Doctor Who

Just wondering if anyone here is a Doctor Who fan? I've caught a couple of episodes (Human Nature/Family of Blood) of Season 3 on the Sci-fi Channel and I think I'm hooked now. I must admit watching Freema Agyeman running around as Martha Jones didn't hurt with keeping my attention.

Being a fantasy/sci-fi fan most of my life, I'd always heard about Doctor Who, but it never really caught my fancy. Guess I thought it might be a little too British for me.

I just couldn´t...

British comedy/entertainment is somehow different.

I'm a Doctor Who FAN, in the sense that I can't stand the smug, overbearing, narcissistic and not-gay-enough New Series.

Fortunately, the BBC R1 SD's of the old Tom Baker classic are multiplying rapidly, and just dug up another stash of heretofore un-disked story arcs for download on iTunes Store.
(And even a few Patrick Troughtons vs. Cybermen, how cool is that?)

Same here:
It was always that weird low-budget thing at 7:30 or midnight on the lower PBS stations, and I could never tune in for Episode 1 of a story arc (even with Ben Franklin's recap narration), so I could never understand who was running down which hallway or blinking penlights at who--

Ah, but on DVD, with nothing to interrupt the serial from beginning to end...
Demonstrated that the right script can make you forget about even the lowest production values.

I just freaked out when i saw DOCTOR WHO !!!
I love the new show and Torchwood the spin off .
season 4 is coming to dvd in a couple of weeks
and it's not with martha ,
it's that lady in the season 3 christmas episode
(did you see it?)
She's his new side kick for the season .
I too started on season 3
and i love martha jones and i hear she does make an appearance along with rose from seasons 1and2 in 4.
Im desperately waiting for them to release all 4 seasons on blu
for the regular dvds cost 99.95 each why bother !
They put Torchwood season 1 on blu-ray (i have it)
so hopefully DOCTOR WHO isn't far behind .

If you go to the web site you see it has millions of fans,
( your not alone)

the girl who played Rose in seasons 1and2
is now the star of confessions of a call girl on SHOWTIME
The fans loved her more than martha jones .
she had a following like luke and laura !!!
Her real name is Billie Piper

Not gay enough ?
What about Captain Jack the bi-sexual leader of Torchwood,
who started on DOCTOR WHO .

Love Dr. Who, learnt about it many years ago when PBS first aired some episodes. I am watching the new ones now, Canada is a bit behind (Sept started season 4) but not as far behind as the US (from the post above). The funny thing was that I thought it was cancelled (the CBC tends to move it around every season and no repeats during the time off, so easy to lose track of it) but then during the Olympics I saw that it would be starting in Sept again.

Although the short answer (that the New series completely misses by a four-lane freeway) is that the old-school Doctor is, basically, an alien Sherlock Holmes--
If you can picture Conan Doyle's original book-version Sherlock, ie. a frustratingly oddball genius who no one could put up with except for loyal Dr. Watson...

(And, like many Holmes, you can have Basil Rathbone playing him, or Jeremy Brett, but the cases still end up solved the same way.)

Believe the "gay" was referring to new x-prod. Russell T. Davies (late of the UK "Queer As Folk"), who did everything to niche-tailor the New Series except throw in a Kylie Minogue cam...oh, wait, he did that too.

(Yes, even the "Colorful black characters", the "Snotty attempts at status-quo bashing", the "Trendy fascination with pop trends and reality shows", and "Disturbingly misogynist preoccupation with matronly Dolores Umbridge villianesses", the whole package...)

Does it get better after they wrote out Ms. Camera-Hog, who thought the entire series revolved around her?

I was a fan of the original series, and would love to watch the new ones, but the DVDs are too damned expensive. I have never seen them on sale for much cheaper than $80.

Yes!
[Show spoiler]But she shows up again in season 4. From off the top of my head she appears in season 4 episode 1 Partners in Crime and 10 Midnight but it's just for a few seconds, however for 11 Turn Left, and 12 Stolen Earth, 13 Journey's End you can't miss her

You should try an episode of season 3 (Blink!) or 4 (Midnight!) and if you don't like at that point you probably never will

If you haven't, I recommend season 3 episode 10 Blink and season 4 episode 10 Midnight, two of my favorites.

I didn't care for the first season all that much with Christopher Ecclecton (not sure of spelling, too lazy to look...) as the Doctor. I didn't like Rose at all, but the second season was better with David Tennant as the Doctor.
And I probably wouldn't have got in to Doctor Who if I had started watching at season 1, but I started at season 4 (Donna ), then went back to watch 3 then 1 & 2.

And someone mentioned Captain Jack
Torchwood on Blu-ray is awesome! It was a blind buy for me, never seen a single episode. Now I can't wait for season 2.

Forgot to mention that I'm trying to go back and watch all of the older DW episodes now.
I've bought several of the early DW DVDs with the episodes from 1963. It's kinda a pain because they don't have sets of seasons like DW2005 does. So I'll be watching old episodes until new Doctor Who

just a bit of trivia that can be helpful

the show started in the 50's or 60's in B&w and then it was cancelled in the late 80's. though they did give the rights to someone else (think it was Fox) to bring it back in the 90’s So a year off is not that bad

the doctor is a Time Lord (species) from the planet Gallifrey, they have two hearts and if a Time Lords body gets too damaged then it can regenerate (i.e. looks totally different-new actor- and acts different) up to 12 times (in theory) so unlike other series where the actor is important for Dr. Who he just regenerates so the change is in the continuity of the series.

TARDIS: is the ship type and stands for Time And Relative Dimention In Space and in essence the ships inside is in an other dimensional bubble and what you see is not the ship but what the Chameleon Circuit camouflaged the ship as to make it fit with the surroundings but on the Doctors ship the circuit is broken and is stuck in the shape of the blue police box. Also the ship has infinite rooms and is semi alive.

The Time Lords got into a major war/battle with the Dalecks. The only way to defeate them was to use a weapon that also destroyed themselves. That is why he is "supposedly" the last Time Lord. Also the Time Lords don’t seem to have names but more like titles (he is “the doctor” that is his name, his nemesis is “the master”…)

oh yeh and the cybermen are now man made suits for humans which went wrong in another dimension!!!

That's too bad Tennant is leaving, he was my favorite Doctor Who. Of course, he's the only actor I've seen play the good Doctor, so my view could be a bit bias. But Tennant looked like he was having a blast playing the role and it made the show fun to watch.

I've since bought the Season 3 DVD and really enjoyed watching his video diaries.

I loved the first season. Christopher Eccleston is a fantastic actor.

I kept giving the 10th Who a chance. Couldn't get into him.

I'm in love with Torchwood (and Jack)!
